Stabs gotta be carbon

The stab is so small and thin and prone to abuse, I feel like glass stabs are a relic and need to be put in the scrap bin.

And for the record I’m talking about solid stiff solid carbon, no need for weight saving in the stab.

Vs g10 Sold carbon takes more abuse, stiffer, more responsive. Also, (no hard data here) carbon handles cyclical loads better. I imagine g10 looses some Pop after a bit in a way thsts hard to quantify.

Anyone running a Carbon stab on KT nomad 830/700? Asking for a friend!

I’m using KT Pulse stabs with Atlas.

And also with the Solus front wings of course.

Can’t comment on abuse or longevity but… I was 100% with you until I tried the Crisp Flex 110. Now that’s the only tail I want to ride.

i’m pretty locked in on my north system so i can’t really play with stabs much(this thread is legit for a friend!) but this stab i’m on is 3 years old now and 2 of those are with me (so some of the most brutal abuse in foiling!). I feel like i would have gone through half a dozen g10 stabs!

Also it looks like crisp is offering it in carbon now!

Yeah just for the 110! I still ordered the OG because I loved it so much.

Crisp Flex lover here too !!

It’s made my KT nomads/atlas quiver way way more fun and loose, also faster.

I’ve given to friends to test on their AFS Enduro quiver and they loved it too vs the full carbon original Silk HA of comparable size.

I myself also found the Silk V1 650 to gain better range to handle the full speed and carve of the Chicama Wave I tried it on.

But for sure it’s not just a matter of material but also the design.

Interesting thread. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know how flex affects the performance of the system. At least marketing speak talks out of both sides of the mouth - Crisp wants you to lean in to flex being a good thing while Axis touts the highest modulus carbon in their skinny tails.

What I do know a lot about as a mechanical engineer is how to design for stiffness.

I’ll put my prediction front and center: someday we are going to see a Stainless Steel tail wing.

Without boring you with numbers, the stiffness of various materials in order of least stiff to most stiff assuming the exact same tail profile:

G10 (least), S-glass/epoxy, regular carbon 0/90 weave / epoxy, aluminum, high modulus carbon unidirectional 0/+45/-45 layup, ultra high modulus carbon, Stainless Steel (stiffest)

the stiffest materials could either allow less tail flex or potentially same flex with thinner profile or higher aspect ratio.

Tail is the only place I’ve found flex to be a choice. Having ridden ultra stiff and super flexy from multiple brands it’s more preference than on being better than the other.

For Crisp, he has said his goal was to make it feel like riding pow, and I’d say that was achieved. Ultra stiff is kinda like ripping around on groomers. Neither is bad and each have their days where one could be preferred over the other.

Some brands have tested with titanium tails a season or two ago

definitely is some merit in the idea of some load and release but only very intentional and only in an otherwise very stiff and finely considered setup. Like the final tweak.

To that end I have a crisp tail in my wishlist.

Also to the question on metal stabs:

I saw an aluminum stab on a setup before the races, but the rider told me it was only because it was a fast way for the brand to prototype shapes. Easier to CNC machine a bunch of iterations versus make a tool and lay up the carbon. It might be what that is on the duotone setup, but the one I saw was not duotone

Tbh I don’t understand why? Cnc cutting steel carbon and g10 all the same?

Stainless Steel(for the molds) is way different. G10 is def easier to cnc than aluminum, but I imagine the g10 Isn’t stiff enough for those tails :thinking: ?

I was thinking a block of UHM carbon surely fine to cnc but then I know nothing

Yeah but that solid block of carbon isn’t an off the shelf product like g10 or aluminum so you gotta make that which takes time and stacking all that carbon just to turn 90% of it to dust is $$$$

also unlike g10 carbon needs to be sealed with some kind of paint or clear coat so more process time and $$$$

Unless it’s as thin as a razor blade, CNC aluminum is strong enough. I’ve made many rear wing with areas from 120 to 170, it works very well.
