Unifoil New Afterburner Tails

I’ve had the same. A small crack appearing from one of the bolts on my 15.5 Afterburner (that I really like). I’ve been told by the local rep / shop / dealer chap there was a production problem and so I’ll get a warranty replacment.

  • another local Unifoil rider had his 15.5 snap. He rides with way harder turns than I manage.

I’ve used both the KD Race and Afterburner 14.5 (both are actually about the same length). Afterburner feels faster, and is definitely thinner. KD has more lift, and I needed to move the mast forward about 1/4 to 3/8" when I switched to the AB. Used both tails winging on Progression125 and P100, with medium fuse. Zero shim. (I’m 180lbs). Haven’t tried the AB on the P140, yet, as the wind has been really good this whole week and a half I’ve had it… Still having trouble getting the whistling to go away, but it’s getting better… Right now it whistles at low speed and again over about 20 kts, but is relatively quiet at basic 13-17kt cruising. Kinda bizzare.

The improved speed is most noticeable when flagged out downwinding. It’s faster and stays on the bigger bumps easier. The KD gets REALLY squirrely above the 20kt range or so (maybe due to flex in the G10?). Will be interesting to see how the AB does in lighter wind/smaller bumps… So far, I love it!

How do you like the Progression 100

I love it! It takes a bit more juice to get moving, but once up and running, it’s awesome. I just wing, so can’t speak to prone, but it’s really fast and loose winging in winds around 20 knots and up. It allows me to go faster upwind in sloppy bigger surf offshore, and also has the speed to easily stay with the bigger swells flagged out going back downwind. When I get powered to the point I can’t keep the P125 in the water, the P100 really excels. When I let it get slow, it’s harder to get moving again, so I have to be ready to power back up with the wing, and I have to be a lot quicker with tacks, or it drops out (probably user error)… But when powered up, it’s super fun!

Hey guys, just wanted to make sure everyone knows that there was a lay up issue on the first batch of afterburner 15.5s. If you crack one Uni will replace it free of cost. Just have to provide pics and serial number. The manufacturing issue has been resolved. Also make sure that the screw’s you are using are seating well into the recessed screw area of the tail. The tail is thinner than the progressions so double check the screw is seated right.

On the topic of making sure the bolts are seated properly this may or may not help some people. I’ve had to shorten the furthest bolt back on the tail wing to properly seat it with a few progression tails as they were slightly long and would bottom out without pinching the tail down. specifically with 0 shim, I’ve done the same for a few friends who’ve had the same issue and multiple of my own fuses. When the afterburners came out I continued to used the bolts that I had already shortened on the tail so I’m not sure if that was an issues with those as well but something worth considering, make sure the bolts aren’t too long. If they are I’m sure they can be filed down but a grinder or hack saw works well to shorten just a touch and chamfer the edge so it threads nicely. Not sure if the hardware was updated or others noticed that issue but the hardware I had was from before the progression tails came out so that may have not been a thing yet. That could definitely put unwanted stress on those wings and it’s a simple 5 minute fix.

could this defect be causing it to whistle too ?

Anyone try a AB tail on the p200 for downwind?

Yes. I am on a Evo 155 and changed to short fuse +15.5AB tail. used to use the medium fuse+prog 13.5 tail on my Prog 200 but experimented and now use my prog200+short fuse+15.5AB tail together for both small runners and downwind. I feel like it handles speed better, and pumps much much better and short fuse means one can control pitch

I tried the 14.5 ab with the short fuse on my P170. It definitely helps with the pitch stability as you build speed and adds some extra distance on the glides. I imagine it would do the same on the p200

I’ve been mostly using my 14.5 ab with my evolution 155 and it is very pitch stable at even the fastest speeds.

I’m torn on getting the 15.5 or the 14.5…

I haven’t used the smaller AB but the 15.5 turns better than expected on the P170, not too much different than the 14.5P. The pump was a whole lot easier and there wasn’t a speed penalty for the extra size.

And

Seems the consensus is better pump. Does it also hold well for pumping out of holes and going through turbulence when prone or is it best for straight line pump efficiency?

I’m still on 14” G10 tails and quite happy with them, but considering AB upgrade for prone at 95kg. (115E, 155E, 140P and 170P).
