That discounted Evo has to be making way for something!
Honestly, I find it really interesting that the progression hasn’t been discounted. That one seems really long on the tooth.
I get that in the bigger sizes the progression is definitely a more stable and forgiving, beginner wing, but in the small sizes, at least by the numbers, there’s a lot of overlap between the progression and evolution(the smaller evos are even lower AR).
I don’t know, I feel like both the progression evolution were hitting a good sweet spot for span and aspect ratio for really versatile one foil quiver for experience riders in the smaller sizes but there’s a lot of really great foils in that space now and I feel like these reflect an older Design language.
Feel like the aggression reflects shift to assist. for nonpowered Foiling I think the market for a foil like the aggression is barely in the double digits. Also, Uni went down a mast development rabbit hole and it seems like alot of energy went into that.
I personally am looking for a new 9-10 AR foil in the 750-850 range. The uni pricing is in line with what I’m looking for and the system is compatible with my mast tweaking skillet so it’s on the list, I’m just waiting for the next thing to drop.
I’m not on the Uni team, but do attend the progression sessions when I can. There was mention of something that was being proto’d maybe dropping towards the end of this year/start of next year. No info on tech specs, but not something that would be competing with the aggression. Out of interest, what is it in a 9-10 AR foil you are looking for that the Evo lacks?
Also a video Erik dropped recently in which he is riding a new proto - if you pause and zoom in on the breach/taco the foil is visible and looks 10ish AR.
I share your confusion with Uni’s business and model strategies. I’ve also given up trying to make sense of their microscopic production runs and influancer army getting priority over paying customers.
On the current wings: 115 Evo is realy good on point-breaks and pumps like rhe 125 Progression. The 130 Aggression is my daily driver now. Way more pitch-stable, better roll and pumps better than the 140P (and I’m old/unfit/95kg). Definitely not just for the motorized few. The 155 Evo is the perfect groveler/shore-run wing. I suspect the 135 could be a one-wing quiver for lighter guys.
But you asked for rumours and what’s-next:
The Evo sale is probably just to draw some attention to the 3 foils they have in stock and hoping to sell so they can pay for the next 30 prototypes Cliffy has to buiild for Erik.
I have spent time on the progression 140 and 170 and they never really worked for me. I feel like both of them were great small wave foils, but misbehaved at higher speeds. Never really rode the evo, but it seemed like more of that progression flavor. It seemed like they were designed to be big HA foils that inexplicably felt smaller in their turning and roll. It seems like the new breed is a small foil but inexplicably pumps like a larger foil.
Since then, I’ve been riding the north SF stuff. The 930 at first but now mostly the 680. Both have fantastic, low end and a really composed top end at the expense of glide. I’m so so close to the 680 being a one foil quiver, I just want to trade the smallest amount of that lively small Foil feeling for just a hint more low end and pump. I’m thinking the 750-850 range and keep span under 900
Probably not what you want to hear but I have a Prog 140 permanently set up on one board that I am teaching my wife on (and I use from time to time) and an AFS Silk V2 (750, 9 AR) on another board and the V2 Silk does amazing on small waves and it’s range is soooo much better than the Uni and the old Silks. Pumps great, glides well, and I’ve used it on everthing from knee high waves to overhead Chicama.
If your mast has an adapter for it, highly recommend trying a demo! I was all about Uni for a few years but these new Silks are sweeeeet. Specifically the 750 / 850 for prone/sup at 70 kg. Just such a great all around wing.
When I talk about my mast program specifically I just mean socket style mast to fuse connections(lift, code, uni, north, hydrocraft) where I can take my old mast and with some epoxy and some metal working for the hardware modify my current mast to fit that system
Just got 2 adaptors from Stringy so I can use axis wings on a Uni mast & another 1 that allows me to use a Uni wing on an Axis mast. Machined aluminum adaaptors. You need longer mounting bolts but otherwise perfect fit. https://www.jimstringfellow.com/
