7III - Water sports tracker for Apple Watch or iPhone

I created a simple tracker app for Apple Watch and iPhone because I wasn’t satisfied with the existing options. The app is specifically designed with a focus on downwind foiling.
You can download and test it for free. Please let me know what you think or if you have questions!

Features:

  • GPS tracking for all water sports
  • iPhone and Apple Watch support
  • Seamless water sports workout import and export with Health*
  • Statistics, tags, and editing of routes*
  • Lifetime option available
  • Simple and beautiful design
  • Cool water sport sticker pack :open_mouth:
  • Your workout data stays on your device. You’re the customer, not the product

Could there be a way to have friends on the app that allow you to share your tracks with each other? It would be really cool to have an option for their flights during your session to be displayed on the same map.

I think it would be even more useful if people with cell service could allow an overseer to monitor a downwind race in realtime. The visuals, stats, and safety aspects of that would be amazing.

I had the live tracking aspect in at first, but it seems like there are other companies specializing in race tracking, so I don’t think I am going to try to tackle that for the moment. Also because I am not intending to make the app for Android as well. We found that using WhatsApp tracking in our group chat is enough in terms of seeing where everybody is and everybody already has WA.

Importing XGPS files is on the list. Especially for the Garmin people out there

Cool, will check it out. I guess for most the data privacy angle is maybe less interesting (but I get it), it would be cool if you made it 100x better than the alternatives for DW specifically, that could be cool. What is unique about DW that isn’t addressed by the alternatives.

To my mind the thing that is missing is “who is going fastest” in the broader community, and among friends, which I guess is incompatible with your data privacy angle, but something to consider (privacy preserving leaderboards…?)

Eg this idea

That online leaderboard is a great idea! I will gladly add xgps export for my app if that is a feature a lot of people want!
My main focus was simply great Health integration, lightweight design and easy on the battery for Apple Watch.

First, “ if the product is free, you are the product. “ is my signature in my email. So thanks for that. I will definitely check it out.

Second, what is this WA tracking?

Thank you! I mean there are some great products that are just free and maintained for free or on donation basis too!

WA == WhatsApp

Update on 7III Water - now with turns counter, pop ups detector and a very cool statistical overview. Not to forget: GPX import and export. So now you can even use your Garmin watch to record a session, then import it with a few taps.
Here are some other new features:

  • Optimized for Apple Watch: Start and stop sessions without touching the screen—just turn the Digital Crown (NEW!)
  • Yearly and monthly stats like number of sessions, days on water, and distances covered at a glance (NEW!)
  • Track average speeds, time on foil, max distance, turns completed and more (NEW!)
  • Filter statistics by discipline, location and tags (NEW!)

Still a free download:

A feature that could be very useful for downwind bump technique drills - use the gyro to measure how much you are pumping. I think learning to glide without pumping might be the best drill for improving bump skills, and this could be a way to measure it.

Trying to measure pumps is an idea floating around. But I have some more interesting ideas I want to add for now: a kind of custom dashboard where you can add different wind measurement and webcam sources, to all show up on one screen.

I looked and there are a few pump foil specific apps (4!), some have some pump vs glide stats, I will see if it is at all insightful

FoilMotion for iPhone is great

I tried the app. The UX is slightly less intuitive than the alternatives, and it seems not to filter for bad GPS data from arms swinging (137km/h 1s top speed). It feels like a trial period rather than a paid unlock would be more likely to convert, as I’m not sure of the value and can’t test the other features.

Are you talking about 7III Water? We filter the GPS data, although it is kalman filtered especially for water sports, so it will not work when using inside. Can you send me the GPX file privately so I can check out the 1s bug? 137 km/h is not possible from swinging your arm I think
Almost everything is free in the app, you simply can’t use many hashtags and only show a couple of activities in the free version + can’t edit the gps data. So not sure what you are talking about…

I wanted to test the editing of a track which was paywalled

Will email track

No worries, I’ll send you a GOAT code! This app is a passion project—something I built for myself, my friends, and all the other frothers who don’t want to pay $20 a year for a simple GPS water sports tracker. I don’t really make money with it (yet) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The speed feature is new, so that’s probably a bug. I’ve got a few more to squash in the next update - like a smoother map, iPhone tracking glitches, and the Apple Watch sometimes starting multiple sessions when using the digital crown to start. So any feedback and bug reports are super helpful! Just bear with me - it might take a month or two to roll out fixes since I have to prioritize the apps that actually pay the bills :winking_face_with_tongue:

just downloaded it! can you run it the same time as the Dawn Patrol app? or will that mess up the metrics?

Looks good so far. Looking forward to testing this on the water. I like Waterspeed but the interface and syncing can sometimes be a little…not smooth.

  • Running it the same time as another app should work if that app does not save to Health too. If it does save to Health, it will not work on Apple Watch as there can only be one app recording an activity. If you are using the iPhone to track your session, it should work!
  • If an app you are already using saves the activity and a route to Health then you can simply open, edit, tag, sort, see stats on 7III Water. It’s really easy to assign tags and the right sport inside of Water.

The Health as the default data store is really nice. I like that this is a passion project, you definitely feel the “commercial pull” in the more popular apps
