Having just watched the clips from Dave West and Oceanpixels, it looks like the prototype wing turns really well but the pump looks less than ideal. Compared to some of the other, leading surf foils, there appears to be less glide and more effort required to pump these new wings. That being said, I am basing this on just a handful of clips.
Given that the conditions I see are very close to the Florida waves that strongly influenced the new Unifoil Progression wings, I may have to think about keeping some Axis gear for winging and selling the rest to fund a Unifoil setup.
If the surf wing doesnt look promising to me, I will be moving off Axis around May to Unifoil, we’ll see! I’m skeptical on Unifoil rear wing options, seems like they only have a few carbon ones + the G10 3 packs. If there is some adapter that will let me use Axis rears with Unifoil that would be pretty sweet.
All bottom mounted stabilizer options work on Unifoil - so there are tons of options. I primarily use Takuma and KD stabilizers and they are great. I actually only have one Unifoil stabilizer and rarely use it.
You mean this clip? I guess I would say that I’m impressed with a bottom turn breach and not bailing. Hard to judge pumping from a clip would be my to be fair comment.
It might be worth having a look at the 877 on here - they fit Axis black fuses and were designed and optimised around a low stall speed and low drag when gliding but without too much compromise at the top end. Anhedral shape + tips are designed to breach and continue with minimal fuss.
The result is a foil which is still faster than most out there but with an incredible bottom end and carves easily.
This has been my goto foil since we launched it last year as it is just so much fun and so versatile; we have since done an 1107cm^2 version that is slightly higher span but reduced AR to try to maintain efficiency and turning for heavier riders / less powerful conditions.
Full disclosure - I designed them so am perhaps biased, but feel free to shoot any specific q’s my way!
@McD I was very close to ordering one of your demo masts as an alternative to the Axis HM. I really like the idea of your team bringing some high performance Moth experience to foiling!
Have you managed to get the 1107 to roll more easily than the 1099? That would be very interesting if it still pumps well.
Have you given them a go prone surfing? If you’re interested we have a few guys very familiar with the ART range in the surf in North Cornwall who would be very interested in the optimisations over the 899 and 1099. Key shortcomings for us are usually that they don’t handle choppy surf conditions which are pretty typical.
Nice! Yes our masts were HM and stiff before others were chasing that… I think we are still stiffer and more tapered than most
I’ve not tried the 1099 personally only the 999, but based on the parameters I would say yes:
1099: 1100 wingspan / AR 10.6 / 1144cm^2 area
1107: 976 wingspan / AR 8.6 / 1107cm^2 area
Added to this the planform is more tapered which generally helps roll, all else being equal.
Area is slighlty smaler on the 1107 but the foil can be pushed really hard before stall so I would expect the bottom end to be higher also.
I’ve only winged them, but can depower and pump a long way. The 877 has been in some big surf prone + tow in and seemed to work well. Obviously for really big surf a shorter span might be preferable if you are prepared to trade bottom end for turning. It would be great to get some of the guys in Cornwall give them a try
Rode the 1010 again the other day in small surf with a classic 13’’ KD tail and aluminum mast, fantastic lightwind winging setup.
I really love that wing, it even breeches great
Hey guys not a foil review as such but just got myself the power carbon high modulus 75cm mast,
First thoughts where definitely looks and feels more solid than the old carbon mast I have been on and this proved even more noticeable in the waves, the responsiveness was a stand out for me straight away at first flight, even the pump which I was expecting to feel a bit more drag with the longer cord at the bottom of the mast compared with the old mast this wasn’t the case and I think due to being able to push down and trust it won’t twitch out gives you a lot more confidence and I found myself doing some of my longer runs to date, even when carving the stiffness is amazing and just gives you the confidence to push harder knowing you won’t get that unexpected twitch that I use to with the old carbon mast so overall extremely happy. Is it worth the price tag that’s up to the individual but it’s got me grinning ear to ear so not complaining.
I’m 83kg ride mostly prone some DW but early stages, surf is anywhere from waist to over head wings used 980 HPS 999&1099 art with a variety of tails all on the short fuse.
