Best Board bag for Airline Travel?

What’s everyone’s favorite bag for Airline travel? Any features you love?

Anything you wish you could change?

I got one from Mystic that was on sale. It works great but it doesn’t have wheels. Definitely get wheels.

I have been using the Roam bags. Good padding and handles. No issues with abusing the zippers. I just bought the 6’3 wheelie bag for traveling with wing boards to go along with the 2 other day bags from them.

I’ve gone through a bunch of bags. One thing to mention with wheeled bags is that unless the bag has a lot of structure, the side wheeled bags (like the Roam) are super annoying to wheel. I haven’t used the Roam (and it might be ok depending on how rigid it is) but I’ve used others like it and really didn’t like them. They drag while you wheel them if they lack structure. I much prefer wheeled bags that wheel with the board flat (not on its side).

The ocean Earth bags are pretty solid and some of their models have really good padding.

I’m using a Gong bag that I like a lot but I have unique size limitations due to integrated fuse foils (AFS) and a lot of bags don’t work for those so I’m limited in options.

The Curve Armordillo bag is more of a day bag but has really good rail protection and is cheap - I have several of these and like them. If I was only checking a board I’d be comfortable using it.

It’s tempting to pack a ton of stuff into a board bag but I find that packing to the weight limit often results in a higher risk of damage. You are better off leaving the board bag light and packing other stuff in another bag UNLESS it is padding the board.

Also, here is the padding thickness on some travel bags that I found when researching:

  • Ocean Earth - 20mm
  • Larry Foiler - 20mm (the wheel setup on this bag is not recommended)
  • Dakine - 12mm
  • Prolimit - 8mm
  • Manera - 8mm
  • Ride Engine - 5-10mm

I too have been through many bags.

I’ll not dog the ones I didn’t like at this point, but here is what I have.

PKS kite roller bag - works great when I am going with tow gear only. 10mm padding and wheels. No longer made..

Manera 747 Wheeled bag. - This is my favorite bur has limitations. I can fit my tow board and wing board inside their own protective bags.

2 masts, Silk 650, Enduro 900 and 700, fuse, 3 tails, 5m wind wing, leashes bootie etc.

This one has plenty of structure as long as your wing board is near snug dimensions. Also easy to keep in weight limit.

Prolite Armored Coffin bag - I can carry all the above, plus 2 additional wind wings, pump, hard hat and another mono block foil. Basically everything but the kitchen sink.

This bag seems indestructible. But its very heavy. I have a hard time not breaking the 70# limit, but I don’t worry when my gear is in it.
