Hey all.
Ive been winging now for 4 years and have been adding supfoil/pump to that more recently. Ive been using gear from the same manufacturer which ive been very happy with, but they only have a fixed thickness 14mm hm mast which is too flexy with larger foils/pumping.
As the mast is the main issue, this is the point im starting my search from. Im likely going to start with a stiff 70cm ish mast for supfoil/pump and only replace my winging kit later if i really feel the need to.
Ive been having a good look at gong and see that they do a 15/19mm hm mast which looks pretty attractive. Im more inclined toward the 19mm as it seems that 15mm would likely only be a small improvement over what i already have. I appreciate gong’s honesty on how thick a mast should be for a given foil wingspan.
But then i look at some other mfr’s and talk of 12mm uhm masts with seemingly little to no mention of the limits of the foils they can be used with… (or limits which seem well in excess of those stated by gong)
It seems a little too good to be true to be able to use a 12mm mast with 120cm+ span foils? Is this more a case of ‘you CAN but you pay for it in flex / reliability or ride the foil well within its limits’ similar to my 14mm hm mast.
Bottom line being if gong say you need a 19mm thick hm mast to ride >120cm span foils, then why arent most other manufacturers saying the same especially with all the new high aspect foils?
