I just picked up a new rig Code 810x, 80+ mast, 142 AR mast and have had a couple of super fun sessions on it in weak wind swell. I want to round out the quiver with a bigger wing and MAYBE a smaller wing.
Main riding spots are southern zone of costa rica so plenty of swell and long period energy so the 810x will probably be a daily driver but would love a bigger wing to hunt down gutless rolling swells and novelty waves
980s? 985x? thoughts recs? add another stabilizer?
For micro days, I prefer a little more speed and glide while still being able to turn. I have a 960r that works pretty well for that. I’m 67kg, also long period swell.
Not to hijack but I’d be curious to hear people’s thoughts on smaller code surf wings as well. I had a huge amount of fun on my old North SF680, was my daily driver for anything from knee high to overhead before I went to code. Looking closely at the 740x which has roughly similar dims, but the 810x seems to be the most popular X size by far. If I can get a bit more pumpability by going to the larger 810x without sacrificing too much maneuverability/not feeling over foiled in the head high stuff then it might be the go over the 740x.
I haven’t tried the 985X winging, only FD so far. I’m 200lbs and ride waist to shoulder high waves with it. It often feels big in that it is very lifty as you roll into a turn. The 980S, med fuse, and 150 tail is a no brainer do it all foil. With same fuse and tail, the 985x instantly feels “better.” Especially turning slow like when motoring out and turning onto an incoming wave and more peaky waves that need tight top turns. All is not perfect though, as the S has more range; as it is more back foot and doesn’t lift when rolled over. I’m going to get a shorter fuse to tune the X as the video above shows, the X works best set up in multiple ways. So it you are using to ride the pocket on more peaky waves (and not very powerful for the 985 as it is a big foil,) X all day long. If you are prone and have a long barely breaking point break that you need to pump back out on, S or even bigger X. The X pumps with a high cadence and doesn’t have the long glide that you get on an S. I’ve hardly ever fallen on the S, but with X I’ll get pitched as I can’t feel the height of the mast like the with the S. But for FD, the 985X for the win.
985x is my daily grovel tiny surf foil and i downwind it in light wind bay / hood river conditions. I like the 980s a little better for ocean downwinding. both are killer foils 985 better turning and insane breachability at he cost of pump being more cardio heavy. It’s plenty fast but the 980s glides much better and you can pump it forever, still turns great and breaches too. I’ve send a few 985x ocean downind runs, it works fine the 980s is just a bit more slippery smooth feeling.
For smaller I just rode the 810x in nuclear 30-40mph dw conditions with massive swell wrap coming in and at 180lbs I wished I had something a little smaller but was by no means maxed out in overhead bumps, it actually handled everything too easy I was just standing there most of the time and I just wanted to go faster and turn harder. 740x would’ve been choice but not necessary. On the other hand (not sure what I can / cant say about this so vague but you’ll know hen they’re released) I got a few miles on one of the new R2 in the under 600cm range and as someone who thoroughly hates HA foils, that will be in my quiver. Fast as F**K, surprising low end, manageable span so it’s fun to carve and surf on it, can’t imagine coming close to the top end on it.
