I’m expecting to land on these this coming season so I wanted to kick off the conversation and see who is going to be getting some soon after release vs myself, who won’t likely see them in the water until March/April.
Aspect ratio is 10.1 and Dan from Code says we should expect better low end, glide, and breaching.
Sizes announced along with spans are:
505 at 760mm
602 at 780mm
715 at 850mm
800 at 900mm
900 at 955mm
1000 at 1005mm
1200 at 1075mm
1400 at 1180mm
1650 at 1250mm
With the 720s v1 being my daily driver Dan was encouraging me to step down to the 602 for my first purchase. He said it wouldn’t be a direct low end correlation, but would be close. It’s definitely tempting. Smaller always sounds more exciting, but I could also see a 715 and 900 as casually covering every decent parawing day in the Gorge.
I’m curious to hear what the more long term Code riders are leaning towards and why.
I pumped Caitlin’s 1000 and (what she said was) 1180 last week and also rode the 1000 on a Riift, all in flat water. She also said the S2 was finalized but the R2 was going to be release first, then a few months later the S2.
I found the 1000 to be too twitchy for flat water pumping and a bit exhausting, like I could never come off the gas and glide. It felt quite at home on the Riift in flat water though.
The 1180 was much more enjoyable to pump on flat water and still very turny but not too turny that it’s annoying.
The titanium head ships with the black series Code masts. So all current fuses and announced fuses will work with all masts they offer. I tried to trick James into telling me they have a new fuse and we had a good laugh. But he didn’t admit to any other fuse coming.
what new fuse? isnt it all the same connection system. people hate on the code fuse for being chunky, but they need a chunky fuse for the 2220 foil. so youre paying the chunky fuse tax on your tiny 615, but its understandable why they had to do this. The lack of the monobloc tail is slightly more unexcusable. But the thing that bothered me the most about code is that it took them years to release the 100R tail. If they spent like 5 minutes to come out with that instead of coming out with the stupid foil drive integrated mast or whatever, i probably wouldnt have had to switch brands.
what im wondering is how much of this S v2 is just marketing hype. Is there actually anything better than the S v1 right now after 3 years? Like definitively better in every aspect? I doubt it. I feel like the v2 is just a different foil with some trade offs. Kind of like how silk v2 isnt actually better than silk v1.
Pros and cons to monoblock tails. I’m happy with the flex tails on them, haven’t wanted for anything different. I don’t want monoblock myself.
Lets try them before we get bent out of shape about marketing They haven’t said much. Better low end, glide, and better breaching are pretty normal improvements to look for. Dan also said there’s no rush to ditch Sv1 if we like them. It’s an upgrade, it wasn’t presented to me as a throw away your v1 revolution.
The fact that the v1s are still hugely popular and command respect on the resale market is an achievement in itself. As long as the v2’s don’t lose the v1 flavor I think it’s exciting.
My north 680 is soooo close to being a one foil quiver. I just need a hair more low end to throw my 930 in the bucket.
The code S v1 850 seems like a solid foil, and for me is the biggest one that I would consider to be “surf foil span” but I hear the 715 is a proper high speed wing and doesn’t really grovel so code was always out for me.
I’m unreliable for surf grovel evaluations but the 720v1 did fine for me most of the year. I was using the flex tails and one ocean mast tho, so a different beast. I have to admit, probably August/September I would have preferred the 850v1 or new 800v2 when the flow drops in the Gorge. It starts to feel a bit less fun and more like work because the 720v1 does like to outrun swell here. In the spring and early summer tho….. easy day every day on that foil.
can you say more? I’m still riding my 850v1 silk after trying the 810x and not finding it a bit finicky in messy surf and not usable for my downwind runs where the Silk still is lots of fun. I also have the 720S and it’s great when there is energy but for prone I found it a bit much effort and the silk is just so much more fun. I’ve been riding the 720S on NLv2 mast which is nice and slippery for my weight, but I don’t think it can touch the 850v1 for all-round happiness.
So I’m now interested in a Silk v2 750 to replace the 720S at some stage, and ideally also replace the 850v1 as it’s a pain to travel with. But now you mention heartbreak. If you can point to a review I’d be glad to know why?
The 720s with One Ocean 78sss mast has so much more range and versatility (I consider the mast equally as important as the foil and your No Limitz will feel a lot different here). You might not need the range where you live but here, that setup with a quiver of small to large tails to tune for the day eliminated all the v1/2 AFS Silks and Enduros for me.
I, personally, have decided to build my kit around a psycho efficient mast and faster foils. Then, I tune my speed by adding or subtracting drag with the tail. I find this to be dramatically easier to get massive range out of a single foil than starting with slow foils that I’m always trying to speed up.
Key in your theory is mast you like and are used to. I first demoed a 980S as given with Code 75cm mast, long fuse, and 175 tail. Unrideable as didn’t pump, and spun out on bottom turns. Couldn’t understand what all the hype was about. Tried again on a NL 78, med fuse, and 150 tail and have been riding this as main set up until I just got the 985X which I use on same fuse/mast.
The 985x has slightly better glide, and is more playful in slower waves. But the 980S has better stability when over powered on a wave and the sound it makes slicing air in hard cutbacks is missed with the X! I’m looking forward to trying the new surf tail to give a little high end stability to the X which matches your drag theory.
I speculate that the S2 will be a better wind powered foil than the S, but I think to do this, it will loose a little stability that in part came from a slightly less efficient foil. Take the Surge for example; great lift for it’s size, feels fast, and carves great. Good on wind power with a bigger board and a wing to hold onto, f’ing hateful powered on a wave with a small board and nothing to catch your balance using their tiny surf tails.
I need to get in on this as I’m a huge fan of the 980S. So I’m already eyeballing the 900S V2. For me, I grovel that one, and also wing it all the time… parawing as well. If it’s extremely tiny, I’ll prone the 1130S, but lately I still prefer the 980S. I do have a 985X and prone it a lot, but I still STILL prefer the 980S over all.
I applaud the higher aspect ration. I feel that pushing that AR higher makes the S site better between the X and R foils for an all around foil.
That’s an interesting speculation. I think I’m okay with a little less stability, I like the loose setups!
It sounded like the 900 would be the easy replacement for the 980 when talking with Dan. I’m interested in trying the 1000 sometime to see how that feels as a big foil. I haven’t ridden anything with a 1000+mm span in years.
I remember when the 850S came out a few years ago. That was my first Code foil. I remember the guy saying to size down, like if you’re coming from a 900 from another brand, go 850S, or thereabouts. Seems like it’s the recommendation again… These tings keep getting more and more efficient.
Slightly off-topic, one thing I haven’t done is shim my 980S for slightly less lift for prone. I may try that next to see if I can match the pitch feel of the X foils, but keep the glide.
Yeah, I already feel like Code has exceptional low end. Having it improved with no loss of cruising speed at v2 is impressive.
@FoilWays you’re mainly on Code tails right? I’m always on Flex tails. Have been considering a touch of shim on the Flex 110 for comfort. I get to feeling a bit rear leg heavy on the big days when riding it with short fuse and 720s.
I’m usually on the 120R when winging/PW… but that doesn’t translate to waves because I don’t like to scratch that tail, so I don’t usually prone it. I’ve been proning a slightly trimmed 150AR. It’s too big, but I’m making it work. I’m waiting for Chris (my Chris, not Crisp Chris) to get the 130 Flex in stock (soon), so I can start riding that. But I do plan to pick up one of the new Spice tails when they officially release.
My comment was more based on the fact that I usually don’t feel a lot of front foot pressure or extra lift at speed with Code S foils, but when I ride the 985X a few times and jump back on an S I can tell it’s there. So I’m wondering about shimming to try and neutralize this a bit. More for prone, but I do wonder if I can get more speed on a wing by doing this. I already printed a bunch of shims, but haven’t used any yet.
This doesn’t especially matter to me, but I do wonder how common it is and if I am doing the math right. I’ve never actually done the calcs before but when I was looking at the published spans the changes looked a touch off to me.
Is span^2/area the correct calculation to get aspect ratio?
Like I said, this doesn’t especially matter to me, but if that calc is right I wonder if it’s pretty common for brands to generically label the AR for simplicity? Please correct me if I’m wrong on this.
I found a chopped Silk 130 turned the 980S for prone from a bit locked in on the Code tails into a super fun lively foil for micro to small surf. I’m pretty sure any good ~130 surf tail will do wonders for it.
(also shimming would be interesting, I’ve never shimmed Code or AFS)
