So what’s deal will the R v2 be able to compete with F4? Personally, I have ridden Code for many years from the very start and it was game changing coming from Axis before. When I started riding F4 Orca, I couldn’t immediately tell that F4 was ‘way better’. I haven’t ridden Code since i got my F4 Orcas and I do like my Orcas alot, but I am not going to say that F4 makes Code into garbage, b/c that was never the case. I was never once disappointed in Code and never felt like it wasn’t very good. In any case, now that the Code V2s are out. What’s the deal going to be? Me personally, the only thing I see that F4 is doing better is the slimmer fuse and monoblock tail. Everything else like foil design is subjective and I’m not an aerospace designer or good enough to tell the difference between a very very good foil design, and something thats like 10% better. I feel like if Code doens’t at least give monobloc tails, since they cant change the fuse diameter, they’re always going to be like 5-10% more draggy than F4. I mean if the new code V2 designs are just insanely good then that would shift the tide. But again, I never felt like the Code S or R were outdated or not good. Maybe I need to ride more gear like Duotone.
Ride both as well. Only on F4 these days like you. Still have my code kit. The chunky fuse and Tuttle code uses looks to be a major part of the stiff connection but like you say the drag is noticeable. My sense is they’ll have to work towards a smaller fuse diameter and streamline the connection. Looks like all brands likely evolving in that direction given it seems an obvious area of inefficiency. The difficulty is more on the optics of it. If they dump their current design, then risk alienating a large part of their customer base.
The biggest difference is 85 chord mast versus 105 chord. The 85 chord turns on the magic.
Can anybody confirm if the r v2 will fit on the old style mast? Or needs the collar taken off the new mast?
I am interested in this topic as well. Please include rider weight with experience. Thanks.
I think all the new foils are still backwards compatible. The new mast is prepping for some kind of race solution and/or future proofing if they move the whole line that direction. That was my understanding at least.
Compete in what? The professional race scene? I don’t think Rv2 is the pro race foil.
I asked mostly about the Sv2 and was told better low end, better glide, better breaching, better carving, same speed.
R2 in my understanding is 16ar and rides significantly bigger (like one size compared to r1) that generally should be at least a bit faster I would think.
During the races there was proto stuff out there that looked like a tempo type system (TI fuse piece). I expect that to be used without the collar and a skinny fuse and race foils.
What I’m stuck on though is the new mast. The specs at least are not competitive with the low drag masts from other companies, either thickness or cord. I’m a fairly light rider who just downwinds so the new mast that seems to largely priotize stiffness albeit does get advertised as slipperier though not as highly as the stiffness aspect is a bummer. For me at least I would like it to be as slippery as possible and it doesn’t need to be any stiffer than the current UHM plus, I actually think I could have it be somewhat less stiff. When I’m using big wings I don’t care that much, thought when I’m using the small wingsI want the optimal and on those small wings, especially with my lightweight, the stiffness is less an issue but drag is more significant a factor…
For those with a tuttle board it looks like Jackos new greenlit projects for tuttle mast and ti adapter ($186 USD delivered right now!) could be a solution. I wonder if it will be released as a plate too? 88mm chord and 12.2mm thickness.
I was thinking I was going to go that route with one ocean… But now that code has a new mast foot when taking off that collar to use with a slimmer fuse gives me pause.
Feels like I should have just done what all my buddies did already and switch to F4. I really do like Code but not seeing a reasonably timeline to something that even matches the competition in drag.
I expect Code will keep these new foils live for at least 3 years. Even if they don’t, it’s not like I’ll be banned from getting in the water with old designs. I’m having unlimited fun on the 720s with 11.9mm/102mm One Ocean and never think about fuse drag. IMO the mast and foil designs are so much more important when it comes to having fun. If F4 has the foil and mast you want then yes, buy F4. I just don’t think that making the decision solely based on the fuse is reasonable in most scenarios.
I talked to Marcus at AWSI and he said the foils that will use the black mast without the collar are still at least a year away.
I didn’t see any demo R2’s but I did flat water pump the S2 1000 and 1180, they definitely turn better than S on flat water but it’s not really worth evaluating them outside of a wave context IMO.
I rode the S2 1000 on a Riift in flat water and it handled very nicely, but I’ve never ridden an S on an assist before to compare.
I’m very excited for his tuttle mast, specs looks amazing and will light up CODE foils similar to F4 SR.
where are you getting this about the ti adapter, I didn’t see it yet?
Its in the dropdown selector (but not referenced in the copy).
Sorry if I’m going off topic, but does anyone know if the Axis (or rather One ocean) mast head is bigger than the F-one T2 head or would it be possible to make an adapter for T2 foils? I was stoked when first trying the F-one 12mm mast, but now I feel like I’m missing out on the short chord and tuttle stoke… Gear FOMO will never disappear I guess…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmgafGNMfdI quite some Code rundown at awsi
It’s little text:
6: Titanium Code Adapter. Design is all done, now in Green Light. Special in here for the first 20 people to order. $250 AUD will retail at $350 AUD. The $250 will be the full amount including shipping world wide.
Marcus: “We kinda realized that they did everything better than the R1”
Ku: “it does not supersede the original R”
