Code vs KT - similarities, differences? If you switched, why?

I’m using 1130 and 960 for DW in 12-17 knots in Spain, Mediterranean.

KT is super friendly for beginners because of the low end. I switched from Armstrong due to the low end mainly.

In terms of speed KT is much slower than Code. My colleagues are using Code and they are always faster than me.

1130 is much slower than 1075R (probably 10 seconds/km)

And 960 is closer, but still a bit slower than 1075R (3 seconds/km)

I guess we need to wait until Solus comes and probably will be the same or better league as Code R and F4 Orcas feeling.

But if you need something easy to use, really surfy feeling and easy to learn to downwind/parawing, and you don’t care about the speed. KT Atlas is a good option.

I’m on KT Atlas 570, 680, 790 and 960 for DW

I have the 145 Atlas tail but lately using the 170 atlas tail. 63 Fuse

Was previously on Code 720s , 980s (mostly), 1300s , 770r and 1075r

I don’t ride for speed as I’m focused on surfing, however my total speeds for runs on KT is 1-2 mph faster. Likely because I’m on smaller wings for the same conditions.

KT’s turn harder but have slightly less flow. The Short fuse really pitch unstable and flow was terrible for me especially on the 790, but with the 63 it’s only a minor difference from similar Code setups

KT vs code , the low stall speed on KT and the ability/ comfort to be on smaller gear is a huge advantage. At least at my level

On the Code 720s and even the 770r I gotta be on my game and paying attention somewhat. The 680 Atlas however I can throw around and not even think about stalling. Plus it turns better which is what it’s all about for me. The medium sized wings aren’t affected as much since the Code’s are easy to pump and turn really well. So Atlas 790 vs 980s is a draw in my book.

I also noticed accidental breaches when riding high on the mast are way less common on KT. Once you get high up on the mast the foil doesnt want to go higher up and breach whereas Code doesn’t give you that feedback

I do miss the slipperiness and glide of Code and must say that Code enabled me to progress when I was struggling, but the ability and fun factor of using really small wings makes a big difference in my overall enjoyment

Looking into going with KT. Can you give some info on tail difference between atlas and nomad tails?

I prefer the Nomad tails even with the Atlas front wings bc they allow for tighter turning and a touch more stable at stall speeds. The Atlas tails are faster comparatively but for our conditions here the Nomad tails seem like a better match for the speed of the waves and the bumps. The shim system however allows for tuning so you could almost get by with a 1 tail quiver. I opt for the Nomad 155 on almost everything. Hope this helps

I’m lightweight and wanted something looser and faster, I’m used to riding small (130cm²) stabs. I ride them with my Nomads 700 & 830, and the Atlas 570 & 790.

Feels smoother and looser than my 145 atlas, don’t have a nomad 155 stab to compare, but just by the number 155 it was a no no for me. The 145 is awesome for glide and pump. Low end is better, but the Crisp feels like you only loose around 10% or less of that low end.

They just launched a 150 flex, haven’t tried but if it’s as good as the 130, should be a great option for heavier riders (that’s what’s intended for).

And shim did you use with this stab ?The same one that kt offers with its stabilizers (mast number + front wing number) ?

That was a tough one at first - but I was able to figure it out after doing some testing

Crisp at the moment is providing the stab with a KT adapter - KT fuselages come with a 2° in built (63 fuse - the 56 is 3° in built but doesn’t change the equation system) - the adapter compensates and turns it into 0° (on the 63) - but keeping things simple, you must do a +3° to the whole number system when using the CRISP 130 + adapter.
If not using the adapter - then go with a +1° (according to my own style and liking of riding, you can add or supress 0.5° to adjust lift)

So it looks like this for my setup

Mast 77 = 0°
Nomad 700 = -1.5°
Stab with adapter = +3°
Shim = white +1.5°

Atlas 790 = -1°
Shim then = no shim - just the adapter.

This feedback has been given to CRISP and a new adapter is on the make so the stab is 0° to the system and it’s streamlined to do the calculation just as any KT Stab.

Would also love to try a smaller stabiliser. I am light weight as well, and mostly using Atlas 145 stab, and Nomad 155 only when the waves are a little bigger. Atlas 145 helps in smaller conditions, excellent and effortless glide. The nomad 155 feels a bit smoother, but does not have enough glide for me in our marginal conditions.

I’d say these conditions today are at the boundary line where the nomad 155 starts making more sense to me. And in anything less the Atlas 145 works beautifully.

Tried en the Atlas 570 with the crisp 130 on a powered day and the carve and response and SPEEEED - it’s reallyyyy cool ! :slight_smile:
Hyped on that setup when things get big enough!
