Dock Starting From Boat

Anyone having success “dock starting” from a small boat? very little room to run and build momentum, but curious if there are any tips. I have a Zodiac with small swim platforms and am thinking of trying it out this summer as I don’t have access to a suitable dock.

Also saw this more reasonably priced North pump foil launcher clone and wonder if it might work rigged to my pontoon or swim platform or whether its even necessary.

How heavy is the boat? If the boat is too light a lot of the force you put into getting moving is going to move the boat instead of you.

It’s 18’ hard bottom inflatable center console. Maybe if I set up bow and stern anchors I can minimize the movement, but your concern is valid.

I think almost any kind of launch works, with enough skill and a weight appropriate foil. I can only running start, nowhere near a rock start. I’ve tried launching off all kinds of float docks and platforms, but not a boat. The more the thing I am launching from moves, the worse my launch success rate gets is my summary. At some point it moves too much or too easily and I cannot successfully launch.

Why don’t you just get someone to tow you with the zodiac to practice your pumping? That will be a lot easier than dock starts.

I’ve done that and can do that but I want to learn to dockstart (without a dock). Also just something to do when the kids are on the beach.

Only one way to find out….
