I have two v1 sk8s, 1150 and 750cm2. The 1150 is my main foil, I use it for pump foiling and winging and prone. I love everything about it until the waves get steep and then I’m way over-foiled at 65kg. The 750 I use for winging but I struggle with it when flagged out and can’t pump it without dropping off foil suddenly.
I used it at the Hatchery in +30 knots for the first time this year. Finally felt like I was starting to understand the way it can generate lift and power through hard carves and the amount of speed it needs. That said, I’m still dropping out constantly.
It’s partly a skill issue because when I connect up a frontside carve with a proper backside rebound off the same bump, it feels perfect. But if I mistime it slightly, the bump is too small, or I need to pump over that bump to the one behind, I can’t retain speed to stay on foil.
FWIW, I’m using it with the carving XXS 200 tail because the XXXS that it came with is way too squirrelly and pitch unstable for me. I don’t want to switch foils I just want to master the ones I have, and I’m at a loss how to improve my skills with the 750. Please weigh in if you’ve tried it especially the V1s.
I am 65kg and spent considerable time proning the 650 sk8 and the 690 and 790 eagle also with the wing many times.
In the waves a 750 sk8 is a pretty large foil for someone our weight and Definately will pump. In the bumps it would be a smallish foil that will take skill to keep moving. An 1150 sk8 is a massive foil in any application at your weight and has spoilt you rotten.
I would get a 140 surf xs or short and stay away from those stupid short fuses on the 750. That big 200 tail might be slowing it down too much for your weight. It would go faster with a bigger person.
You need time on the 750 and lots of it and it will make you a good foiler.
Likewise I cant afford to change brands rn, and also want to continue SK8 learning curve cos theyre bloody fun all rounders.
I struggled with my 850v1’s tendency to abruptly drop, esp when getting going, and switching from the supplied 3XS 180 stab to XS 141W really opened up use, esp lighter conditions wanging, and connecting bumps downwind. So longest fuse small tail the go for me!
Would love to try one of those tiny 85 or 95 high aspect XS Comp blades F-one made for the races, but $$$.
Keen on picking up a v1 Eagle 1090 for those light wang and wing downwinders, now the Titan 1 gear’s dropping in price. Or go the Eagle 1290 and chop the tips off.
