I haven’t done a foiling holiday before and I’m trying to understand what people generally prefer.
Would you rather go in a group situation (for example a camp where everyone gets towed in together), or have private accommodation and your own tow-in service?
Keen to hear the pros and cons from people who’ve done both, especially what works better for a first trip.
I’m always the local foiler with my own boat getting towed in nonstop while I watch a dozen guys sharing 3 boats all taking turns waiting in the water and paying 10-100x my cost.
Some places you can easily do on your own like bali, some places, you literally need to train your own captain on how to tow you, like in fiji
My advice, is go with one one buddy to the tidal bore in Brazil or Indo. Guaranteed waves based on the tides, can plan months in advance and the best foiling money can buy, IMO.
Yeah, I have the contact details for Eddie at the Bono River in Sumatra. There are crocodiles and shit, but there’s footage of locals paddling into the waves. Eddie rides a jet ski alongside you and takes footage.
It’s an all-inclusive deal — I think it was around USD $300–350 per day, including meals and accommodation. I’m not sure about transfers, as it’s pretty remote. You can fly from Bali or Jakarta; Jakarta is the easiest.
The best times are during full moons for the massive tides.
Yep that’s what I’m thinking. I reckon a lot of surf camps would be an expensive zoo. Private accommodation and own boat man has to be the way. It would be more organizing to start with but I think the payoffs would definitely outweigh the extra effort. Love the bit about training boatman in Fiji, legend
I haven’t been to the Bono but hope to make it there soon, looks epic. We went to the bore in Brazil with Serginho Laus and had the time of our lives. He’s got it dialed. Definitely an adventure, but a trip you’ll never forget. We made a little video of the trip a few years ago below.
How did you go with the logistics side of it? Was it a mission getting to the bore in Brazil or was there decent transport from the city/airport?
Never had the opportunity to travel to South America but it’s definitely on my bucket list. Just a tad bit far from OZ so would have to meticulously plan beforehand.
I think a solo Indo trip is quite feasible but might have to buddy up or go in a small group for South America.
Logistically is was a long ways to go, but pretty easy. Serginho picks you up at the airport and has the rest dialed in. No fancy accommodations or anything but he gets you on the goods.
