Looking to book a getaway in July hoping for a mix of foiling and general travel exploration hopefully before the world ends itself…
I mainly Wing and SUP surf foil in waves as well as Parawing in sections of bumps preferably warm weather in boardies
Short listed destinations so far:
Hawaii: Oahu and Maui. Looks like good time for wind.
I know it’s off season for swell but am I still likely to get some waves/bumps?
Any tips on somewhat affordable accomodation/locations to be based for foiling on both islands would be awesome
Presuming hiring a car is also a necessity?
Hood River: Would you recommend setting up in one spot for accomodation or is sleeping in a van a significantly better option? Here vs Hawaii in July?
Sanur Bali is my outside “cheaper” option, winds look fairly light though and would mostly be tow foiling.
Haven’t really looked into these as much but may as well list them, feel free to add any suggestions (I’m based in Sydney, Australia)
Fiji: But I don’t have Namotu money
Sri Lanka
Phillipinnes
Vietnam
Have you been to Hood River before? If not, that should be at the top of your list. Nothing else like it. You can get away with boardshorts. The bumps are so good that you’ll forget about normal ocean waves. The community is excellent, everyone is passing through at that time of year.
Not sure how you like to do your travel exploration, but there’s also plenty of stuff to do in the area when it isn’t windy. Whitewater rafting & mountainbiking if you like adventurous stuff, lots of hiking, really nice drives through the countryside, great food, wineries etc.
A lot of people van, but it’s definitely not needed. Stay in Hood River if you like a more metro area, or across the river in White Salmon if you like baked goods.
I’ve actually not been to Hood or Hawaii before (the later seems weird as a lifelong surfer)
Typically I’m a traveller that chases whatever my current favourite hobby is foiling now but Snowboard, MTB, Hiking, Climbing, Diving etc in the past. I tend to travel on a “budget” but really like to live like the locals as far as food, culture etc.
I had no doubt Hood would be hard to go wrong with from a foiling perspective but I was a bit worried it might just turn into a pure foiling trip where I feel like I also want a bit of a holiday with new experiences and exploring so I’m really glad you touched on that.
I’m still tossing a coin most likely between Hawaii and Hood but you’ve given me an area where I can start looking at accommodation now which will help!
The Gorge in July?!!! Cross that off your list, you’ll spend half your time looking for parking. If I had a choice between Maui and the gorge in July… endless clean ocean vs filthy overcrowded river. That’s an easy one.
Not been there for foiling but July is peak wind and swell season in Mauritius. The break at Manawa reportedly gets pretty busy that time of year, but given that it looks absolutely empty other times of year in Dimitri’s videos I am a bit unsure how to parse that local feedback in comparison to Hood or Maui.
Car rental is cheap which is good because you need one to get to the main spots at Le Morne from any more affordable rental accommodation. Bonus for you, no issues getting used to driving on the wrong side of the road. Away from resort areas food both in stores and restaurants is affordable and good. Not as cheap as other places in Africa, but also not nearly as under developed. Diving is pretty good on the West Coast for a no wind day, although the coral bleached pretty badly last year. I can refer you to a dive shop run by a foiler if you decide to go.
Seriously it’s that bad or is this just damage control?
Ergh it’s a pity if the foiling community is heading that way, don’t worry lawyers I wasn’t bringing any lithium powered craft with me. I’m also pretty sure Hood’s been a thing for decades
Thanks so much for adding another option, I’m looking forward to travels around the world while I’m in this foiling phase of my life. I’ll do some research!
If you want to go to the Hatch, yes, it’s nuts. The problem is it’s the most reliable wind and swell with the least milfoil and the shortest drive so everyone goes there.
Dominican Republic (Cabarete) and Puerto Rico are also good options in July. Cheap, warm (hot), good wind, not prime surf season but theres always some waves there too. Lots to do off the water too.
