Should I bring my prone foil setup to the Mentawais? Im flying over from California with my surfboard bag thats going to have 3 surfboards in it. Is it worth bringing a second bag with my prone setup for the down days out there? I don’t leave home without both options locally but its a long travel journey to commit to 80lbs on wheels.
Everyone else on the boat will hate you. No one will want to go to the waves you want to foil. I guess it’s forecast dependent, but really sounds like a hassle with not much upside to me.
Staying on a boat or land? I’ve been to Ments twice (Late October) on a boat and even down days are pretty fun to surf, especially up near playgrounds where there are small wave options. Some of the boys I went with foil a lot, and none of us brought them. We had a great time surfing
Im staying 10 days on land a Botik resort. Watching a perfect foil zone go unridden would be a hard pill to swallow.
Drop a single board and pack the prone, best of both worlds and means you can surf plus foil those waves thatll keep you up at night. its a surf mecca, performance short boards are easy to rent and cheaper to snap, your desired foil set up will not be available to rent.
get all your stuff into one quad or triple board bag, two bags is a head ache.
I’d take it. If surf sux, you may find an easy tow.
It would be easier to rent a surf board than a foil…
Check your airline, Singapore is forgiving with bags and after SoCal you shouldn’t have to check your bags. Maybe a bro has room in his bag. Been 6 times, enjoy.
guess it depends if there is a high tide setup for it, but when I see clips like this I would imagine could be super fun for the slow days. I haven’t been and I haven’t seen much footage of soft waves there but I suppose must be
Adding to the “it depends…” If you have an understanding that your resort will move you around to lots of places, then yeah, why not!? Just make sure you’re not stuck with a boat full of 20 y/o Aussies wanting cover shots at Riffles or Kandui with 5 other boats;10hrs/day!
The resort I am staying at is a small one with several little boats. I typically travel to Hawaii and Costa Rica with 3 surfboards in a wheeled boardbag and use my buddies smaller Manera wheeled foil bag for my prone gear. I have yet to regret bringing both options on a surf trip, but its a long line of connecting flights and boat rides to make it to the Mentawai islands. All the hassle could be real rewarding though. Not a chance of leaving one of my 3 surfboards out of the bag unfortunately hahahahaha
mate i think just the fact that there’s 10 other surfers being annoying would make me wanna go foil
A surfing buddy visited a smaller resort there. He said the owner had taken up.foiling…good.prone spots and epic towing. So its out there!
Would love to know what resort!
This one…Shadow…. ABOUT US - The Shadow Mentawai Surf camp
If you want any more info, DM me and I can find out
i’d leave the foil in the surf boat and then foil back to the camp when you do further missions.. looks incredible out there
Mad not to sub a prone board and surf foil in, replace the groveller in the bag.
Short mast makes things more fun in unfamiliar coral reef country, bloody hard to judge depth in that clear Ments water. 70cm mast ![]()
and expect to make contact with the reef, take some sandpaper ![]()
I asked a guy who went to the Mentawais to foil. He said if you’re taking a foil with you, you need to be able to tell the guide’s where to go, and preferably have access to a ski. So as long as you’ll have a say in what break to go to and you’re not just being outvoted by the other surfers. It would be good to have a foil.
Thanks for the heads up up Hdip. No ski at the island im staying at but they have a handful of small boats. Was thinking of just trying to spot potential prone spots out when on the boat. Its for sure a big commitment to bring another 50lbs of gear with me but might just send it!!
