Hello, I am interested in the new momentum foils. If anyone knows, please share, how does their stall speed and other characteristics compare to the Eagle X series? For example, how does the 960 momentum compare to the EagleX 1000 in ease to paddle up, stall speed etc.
I asked Simeon of voyager foiler how to size the momentum for ease of paddleup compared to the eagle X.
He said the 716 would be equivalent to an 850x. So little harder to paddle up than the 900 but easier than the 800. He said its equivalent to one and a half size up. So 816 would be like an X950 so just under the 1000 in paddle up.
Hard to get info on this stuff.
I had the same trouble when looking at the eagle X’s and it was a similar story in that a x900 would paddle up easier than a 990 but not as easy as the 1090 and that worked out pretty accurate for me.
Thanks man! I guess the next question would be, if the 960momentum is easier to paddle up than the eagleX1000, but it has less surface area, which one is faster?
I would expect the momentum to have a higher average speed in the same conditions.
It hard to make sense of what these new foils can provide based on dimensions. My 900X paddles up easier, stalls more gently, can go slower and faster, pumps better and faster, and also turns better, than my eagle 1090.
Geez this is killing me. Been trying to downwind on the 1190 eagle and the thing drops out so abruptly at the bottom end. Just picked up a new seven seas 1300 but after reading this maybe I should have gone 1000X instead of the 1300. Any input?
not sure how helpful this might be but I have the Eagle1290 and the EagleX1000. Compared to the EagleX1000 the Eagle1290 has better bottom end I would say. So almost for sure the seven seas 1300 you got will have better low end than the 1190 Eagle.
Helps a lot! Appreciate it, I’m tired of spending $ haha
I think we all develop finesse with more time on foil. The higher the aspect the more finesse you will need. It doesn’t mean a 1000x can’t go slower than a 1290 but it takes a certain amount of evolved finesse to make it work. When you one day realize you now have the finesse to downwind a smaller or higher aspect foil it is so easy you can’t believe you could not do it before. That is downwind foiling and all foiling for that matter its just more critical in downwind.
If you are dropping out on the 1190 then you definitely made the correct choice as an eagle X won’t help you in my opinion. As your finesse improves with time on foil then 1190 may seem easy when you come back to it after evolving your finesse on the seven seas and soon enough you will be looking at an eagle X because you feel you are ready. You need to be on foil to evolve.
I am 58 and in two summers have gone from needing and loving the 1290 to 1090 to 1000 to 900 all on the same local run. Don’t worry about the status associated with which foil you ride, just make sure it is the right foil for your run and your current finesse as that is where all the joy is.
This is the correct answer, high AR range is amazing, but you need a certain level of finesse to build on to make it work
New to F-One and just got a 716, can anyone shed light on how these relate to other popular downwind wings? Say Code or Axis.
From the above seems like it would fit in somewhere between the 770r and 860r in terms of low-end (or FB1000 and FB 1070). Assuming it’d be closer to the 770/1000.
Really just to know which day would be good to take it out on.
