GWA Cabo Verde 2025

Best event of the year every year. Guys are pushing it in the pocket on the rocks right now.

Looks like the jumping rules have changed. Before they were only counting jumps with a stalled wing, now it looks like most of the guys are doing lofted jumps while powered. Like it or not…

You have a big wing in your hand. Use it. Cash is doing an amazing mix of powered wave riding and free wing wave riding.

I agree, but I know some want to keep freestyle and wave disciplines separate. These wave heats don’t look too freestyle to me. Cant wait to watch more of it.

Thankfully it seems like the airs out on the shoulders aren’t scoring very well. Fading down turns to bottom turns behind the pocket on the true sets scored very high. I think the judges can keep rewarding what they want to see and it’ll keep people actually surfing.

Sounds like a pure prone event will be happening in a couple days too.

Watched two heats, both times a wing got destroyed, seems unlikely this could work for amateur riders at that rate

Backhand is terrible, poor shoulders of the goofy riders, looks miserable

Nice to see the scoring pushing in the pocket riding, it looks pretty cool. If they had a launcher at the top to get people on foil without the wings it would be world class riding. Would like to see that.

Just watched Cash heat, he is more dynamic, but not 3 points more dynamic. Is that the headline sponsor boost?

Edit: just watched the highlights, probably fair

It does seem like if they are going to punish people for using the wing, and wings get destroyed at such a rate, it would make far more sense to just make it a tow event… even if it is just a marketing thing

I’m wondering how the prone event there will work if it’s going to be bigger in the coming days. I wonder if they’ll just tow guys in.

The wing is a big limiting factor in what you can do on a wave, so that’s why I’m happy to see the rules changed to allow the riders to use the wing for powered tricks. Last year the wing was just a big parachute. Now they can use it for speed and height at least.

Cash is 3 points better than half the field. Not all the field.

There’s no way I would wing that wave. Way to much chance for gear to be destroyed. I would surf it though.

EDIT: That’s the problem with this line of thought though. Just make it a tow event, they’ll surf the wave better. Well you know how else they’d surf the wave better? On surfboards. So why not just make it a surf event.

Surfing na Cash could be doing snowboard carve and air style if it was a tow event, the wing is 100% parachute getting in the way.

Riding backhand with a wing should be outright banned, it’s horrific!

Those rocks… incredible that no one has smashed them yet that I’ve seen, but definitely ups the stakes.

As a goofyfoot in LA which is a land of right pointbreaks I commiserate with them. Being a goofyfoot is just a terrible handicap in all things surfing. Several people have ran directly into rocks and had gear ruined in the first few heats of day 2.

I think what we are all really wondering though is. If @TooMuchEpoxy was out there with a Takuma WK wing, how would he do?

As a Goofyfoot from near Jbay, I commiserate with you too… hateful

The wing does have the benefit of zooting around closeouts and Cash does a nice powerslide, so I’ll give it that

I’d be SHREDDDDDDDING. For real though East Coast USA is goofy footer’s foil paradise. I feel bad for the west coasters.

Day 2 highlights:

Did anyone watch the full event? There were a couple of really iffy moments, made more so by Armstrong being the sponsor and Cash their biggest star.

I think twice he had scores put up, one being an 8, but mysteriously the runs were never shown. leaving the commentators confused.

Other riders seemingly didn’t receive scores at times and then you have Malo scoring a 9 in the semi but going out on the final wave, with Finn notching a score that took him 0.06 ahead…

Not saying there was favouritism or funny business, you could chalk it up to a new sport ironing out the wrinkles. But still, not a good look.

You think the winging was dubious, you should have seen the women’s kite today.
The current world champ was wearing a headset being told which waves to ride by Mitu who was on the land.
She took it off for the final but the scores were extremely suspect with said world champ winning. If you watch it it’s plan to see Moona had by far the best wave and was robbed :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I was surprised by that also. I watched that semi between Malo and Finn but not till the end. While Finn was ripping, Malo put together some incredible rides, was shocked Malo wasn’t in the final.

The event was good but not as good as last year due to conditions I reckon.

I get the ā€œnot the average joeā€ spot but you wanna see the best riders in waves of consequence (for foils anyhow). I watched a bit of the kite surfing finals yesterday, looks so lame compared to the foiling, imo.

Anyone know where I can see when the Surf Foil prone event is running? We are in the window but the website gives no info beyond that. Assuming it depends on wind if the kite is running currently, but couldn’t see anything for the prone saying on/off for the day etc

What a great wave, I would just be riding a shortboard surfing that without a wing or kite or anything
