Curious if anyone keeps track of this
Can elaborate your question?
Wondering how much torque people apply when assembling their foils. I’ve read anywhere from 7-15 Nm
Sorry can’t help you on that. I haven’t seen anyone use a torque wrench on it plus if you put any lubricant or loctite, it will dramatically change the torque. And the type of threaded inserts or just threads cut into aluminum fuse determines how much you can torque it before stripping the threads.
I just do by feel as I have been working on bicycle for many years and have strip many threads in my early years. Best to ask the manufacturer for your specific torque. You will still need a torque wrench which you can use bicycle specific torque wrench.
Duotone have it noted on their mast/fuse connection & recommend 15nm, as I don’t carry a torque wrench can anyone tell me how much this may be just using hand tool ?
Does depend on a few factors like materials. But in General for M8 around 15nm and for M6 around 9nm
Here’s a few numbers from AXIS
I have wondered whether Lift has the same specs somewhere…
Not that I would likely change what I do, but I am guessing some engineer somewhere at each brand has thought of this.
Those Axis numbers are so little. I think I do 2x that
I used a torque wrench to get a feel of what Duotone use. The M6 stab is 6nm, I think, and that’s what you get fairly firm screwdriver, you could go tighter with effort so dont. The M8 need 15nm and I have my hand about half way down long handle on tool they provide and feels like it would need quite a lot more to get tighter. I have weak wrists and arthritic hands.
All fittings are a bit tighter than I would have guessed without measuring.
I use f-one stainless M6 bolts. They recommend 15 nm, which seems crazy to me.
According chatGPT, that torque should cause failure. It recommends ~5 nm and is consistent with Axis. Makes sense to me. Would love to know what others think.
M6 316 Stainless Steel Bolt (Dry, K = 0.2)
| Property | Preload (75%) | Yield | Failure |
|----------|---------------|-------------|-------------|
| Stress | 220 MPa | 290 MPa | 580 MPa |
| | (32,000 psi) | (42,000 psi)| (84,000 psi)|
| Force | 4,372 N | 5,829 N | 11,658 N |
| Torque | 5.25 Nm | 7.00 Nm | 14.00 Nm |
Agreed, 15nm is ridiculous.
After years of foiling, building foils, and striving for the absolute stiffest setup possible know by feel the point right before an M8 is going to give up the ghost. It took a lot of fucked up gear before I learned where that point is.
No important connections should be m6 so if your worried about that you already messed up.
Also worth mentioning - change your hardware out. If you’ve taken a fastener even a hair too far, if there’s corrosion, if the socket is at all deformed…if I even look at it funny- that bolt goes in the trash
