I want to learn prone foiling and I found a Flyer 1300 at a good price, so I bought it even though I know it’s not ideal for the task. I’m now getting a 38l freedom rubix board to go with that foil.
I’m an experienced surfer (shortboards), I’ve had one tow foil session and 1 prone foil lesson with a smaller foil. I was able to catch waves, lift the foil and also some tiny direction adjustments.
Now I’ll be going on my own with my gear, so I’m looking for advice on how to set it up (mast position, shims, maybe?) or any tips to help me get started.
This is a good video that has a bit on mast position.
You can read about it here.
But mainly. Put the foil in the rear 1/3rd of the tracks when you’re learning. If you can’t get the board off of the water. Move mast forward. If you’re getting blown out of the water too fast, move mast back. 1/4" at a time movements are a big adjustment.
Don’t overthink it. Use more front foot than you think you need. Try to pop up 3 inches further forward than you think you need too.
You’re flying the foil, not surfing the board. So think about how the foil is in relation to the waters surface. That’s 2 feet below the board. If your board is level, but you’re dropping down the face of the wave, the foil is just going to come out of the water because it’s level. Match your foil’s fuselage to the wave angle you’re on. This often means you’re pointing the nose of the board down towards the water. Especially so on a steep section.
