She’s 5’6” 122lbs. She wants to prone foil and where we are it’s pretty small and gutless (Charleston, SC). She’s an advanced surfer so I’m not worried about wave knowledge or paddling. She’s towed behind the boat in flat water and efoiled both of which she’s got.
What front wing should I put her on? Is it better to go big and slow or something more nimble with a higher drop out speed?
currently I have a takuma v1 1210 and 750
I also have the kt nomad 830 and 700. Although I’m a little concerned putting her on those with the sharp trailing edge.
If sheʻs used to being up on foil, Iʻd put her on the smallest wing she can initiate foil with, but only at first. I donʻt have experience with any of those wings, but something around 700-800 so sheʻs not fighting the nose when the wave hits her. Because sheʻs a surfer, she has to reprogram how much pressure she needs on the nose. Have her practice dropping in prone, just lifting the nose out of the water under control and putting it back down. She should worry about feet after the nose pressure is under control. She might want to upsize foil after that, but by then sheʻll have a handle on the forward weight.

I would imagine the biggest risk here is a brand that makes smaller foilers that assume for large riders eg Axis where they do weird shit as they get smaller and make them unridable. Code seem consistent in the S line and I’d imagine the 720s is good idea, but I have doubts on the 615s as it’s way too fast for me also an example AFS Silk 650v1 would likely not be a good idea as it’s more for big waves and doesn’t pump much for it’s size. I can’t think of which smallest foils in a range have not made them for big waves instead of small riders. M
I have no idea, but it seems like the 980 kujira would be good if you had it. The 1210 just seems like she would explode and the 750 is so twitchy. 830 nomad seems like a good compromise since it needs a little more power to get going than the 980. Scotch tape the trailing edge as a training wheel, lol? Maybe use it as an excuse to buy a 950 Halo and give us a ride report
Someone is selling a used progression 125 on the forum, which is could be a good option for a lighter person who is progressing. Im nowhere near that weight, but found it to be a very approachable foil.
Just agreeing with others. I ride Code, mostly S series. They’re very friendly in a variety of conditions and I still happily ride the bigger ones I learned on. They also have lots of options for her weight if she wants to rip later.
I rode the Progressions a little when I was starting out. Also, very friendly wings to learn on and probably dirt cheap right now.
My wife is the exact same size, learning, and has been having some nice safe success on a Uni Progression 140 which is around 900cm. But with your quiver maybe try the takuma V1 1210? or the KT Nomad 830.
This was mostly on the ART and especially the ART pro where they wonked out on the smaller sizes and became unrideable but tbh I haven’t kept up since the Fireball
