Thanks Kyle, that make sense and I appreciate your answer - I didn’t want to pester you directly with questions as you seem to spend a vast amount of your time fielding queries and defending yourself! But thanks again, you’re the man ![]()
(Actually, can I ask you a question - Is there any chance you’d produce this mast in black? The proto one Mackite reviewed looked sick!)
Thanks mate, those photos look great and keep them coming.
How nice does that mast look?
I’m new to the forum! Made a short video of the mast. Adapters fit great against the mast and seem to fit perfectly on my North and AfS fuses.
Haven’t had the chance yet to test on the water
Ep18: Cedrus Aluminium Forged Universal Mast + Adapters | Initial impressions
Nice review! I’ve had my Cedrus aluminum mast (75cm with Unifoil adapter) for well over a month now and love it. It’s kind of like having a reliable friend I can always trust along with me. It’s very rigid and makes movements feel one-to-one with my foil and board inputs.
I am super impressed with the perfect fit of the Cedrus Unifoil adapter to my Uni wings. The adapter fits perfect with no possible wobble, and is the easiest I’ve ever felt to get on and off. It’s like it has a magical Teflon powder coat for lube (but I’m sure it doesn’t, probably just magic more likely, since PTFE’s are going away).
I’ve dock pumped for several years and am a stoked prone novice. I’ve own a bunch of lengths of the Axis 19mm aluminum masts and various Sab and Axis carbon mast set-ups. The Cedrus is the most precise and reactive…….oh yeah, and it looks kind of space-age with its aluminum welds and the forged thickness variance.
Also, I’ve tomahawked it (many times) into the sand and rock shallows really hard to where you could hear the slam, and the mast and the Unifoil front wing have been bomb-proof.
For me, it’s a quiver killer mast.
Two questions:
1.) how do you feel the stiffness compares to the axis 19mm aluminum mast?
2.) how slippery does it feel in the water compared to other masts you’ve used?
1.) Overall, the Cedrus is stiffer, but most important it is much more precise. There is no wiggle with the baseplate because of the weld. The 19mm Axis mast is a very good mast, but there has always been a little wiggle in the fittings, and the gaps seem to expand with use. Thus I have a stack of UHMW PE of varying thicknesses that I use for shims. The Cedrus aluminum is far superior and will never need any shimming.
2.) The Cedrus aluminum mast feels like it has much lower drag than the Axis aluminum mast. The first wave that I caught on it felt like it cut loose and flew. It’s just a fun, reliable piece of the rig that I don’t have to think/worry about. I live in a place with cold grinding surf and uneven rock bottom point breaks. So reliability/durability is a game changer for me. Also a shout out to the Unifoil wings and their toughness on high speed rock impacts!
So have you tried the mast ?
Not yet! Full winter -7 degrees Celsius here past few days in Norway! Hope to provide an update soon …
Have you tried the mast? With shipping, customs and 25% import tax to Norway do you still think the cedrus mast is worth it?
Cheers,
Matt in Ålesund
I ended up buying one and it’s currently stuck in Australian customs, but once I’ve got it, I’ll put up my impressions.
One thing I will say is Kyle has been a legend, helpfully answering my questions and sending the mast to post about half and hour after I ordered it, even though he was late for a holiday, which I thought was pretty awesome.
I’m really intrigued to see how it goes. As far as I can tell, the forged is the same thickness as the Carbon versions (16mm), 1mm thicker up top (20mm) and I guess the same thickness as the Carbons down the bottom as they all fit the same adapters. The chord is a bit deeper, but I reckon being so close to the well reviewed Carbon versions, it should be sick!
I’m super lazy and leave my gear together at all times, chucking it fully set up in the back of the ute, but I’ll do the right thing with this mast and see how it goes long term.
Hei Matt
Yes I just got my faktura from UPS for the extra 25% plus customs on top. I think it’s over 10,500 NOK with everything included….
I have not had much time to try it, my only test so far is with a foil drive attached to it and I am a new beginner so impossible to get a feeling for it. But I plan to ride it clean this Sunday just winging and then I should get a good feel for it.
honestly I think price depends on whether you want a universal mast or not. It’s definitely cheaper than owning two carbon or UHM masts from two or more brands.. but if you plan to stick to one brand only then I would say it isn’t worth it.
Just had the chance to test the forged mast for just over an hour here in Norway. Chilly temps down to 6 degrees Celsius but still doable without gloves.
I took it out winging with my Sunova downwind board and 4.5 gong droid inflatable wing and I tried my two foils: North sf830 and the AfS Enduro 1000.
first off the mast feels very stiff: pumping on the swell felt extremely direct. I didn’t do a back to back test with any UHM masts but from what I remember this feels just as stiff as my North UHM mast.
regarding speed , when paired with the AfS enduro tho mast felt very fast. Faster than my own skills could handle going into a turn on some of the swells. So plenty of speed on tap. With the North sf830 it felt slower and it always feels like you can’t push the top end too much on that foil, regardless of the mast. So in summary this mast has more than enough speed for me here in my mainly wind-driven conditions.
on both foil wings I also experienced ‘haptic feedback’ - whistling through the system. I was in touch with Kyle today who explained why this is so (extreme stiffness + hollow structure ) and apparently it happens on some set ups and not others. He also talks about in on the website.
Overall I’m very happy with the mast so far although I haven’t really got to use it much at all as we are in full winter mode and it gets dark at 3.30pm! Hopefully a longer term review will be coming at some point..
Just re-read this part of the conversation about comparison vs carbon so that I could understand what I felt in yesterday’s session.
I couldn’t agree more - carbon dampens /absorbs the vibrations from the foil while the aluminium forged - I felt that it transmits it. Even at taxi-ing speed. It was the first time I had felt something like that through my feet (and booties) and took me a little by surprise at first. So the whole system definitely feels more alive under your feet.
I wouldn’t describe the lack of dampening of vibrations as a ‘hard suspension’ though because the foil behaved fantastically with the mast.
Rather, it is like it has more sensors on it ready to send you instant feedback.
Aloha gang
I ordered a cedrus forged mast last week from their website and it was delivered today. Pretty fast delivery considering I live on oahu, I ordered a 78” forged mast with 3 adapters code,afs,cloud9.
Rigged it up for foildrive and the afs endro 1100 the surf was glassy and waist high I’m pretty stoked how well it performed super easy too rig, the adapter fits perfectly and feels lighter and really stiff on foil.
I’m a pretty heavy rider at 240lbs and had zero issues with anything it was just easy to ride and pumps perfectly gotta say the best money I’ve spent on any gear in while!
Super stoked thanks Kyle for the great service
ervice and products
.
I’ve had a couple of weeks with mine and here are some thoughts.
- First up, a negative. It’s made out of extruded, forged metal, so it’s not as beautiful as a brand new carbon mast. There’s a few little impressions and welding splatter from the manufacturing, but that’s to be expected as it can’t be hidden in a top coat of epoxy like a carbon mast.
- It’s absolutely rock-solid; quite industrial looking, with really amazing tolerances, with the adapter lining up perfectly - its actually crazy, you line up the pegs and push the adapter in and the air pressure pushes it out slightly once you let go, so it’s a really good fit! On the fuselage side, the adapter fits the Unifoil wings better than anything I’ve used before. Coming from a Carbon mast with M6 connections, bolting on the baseplate with the M8 feels bombproof.
- It’s amazingly stiff in torsion, WAY better than my NoLimitz V1 (kinda obviously) but also the Axis Power Carbon HM. I’ve been learning to DW with it, which hasn’t given me much time on foil, but I wake theived with it yesterday and it’s shockingly stiff, with movements to and from the foil translating really directly. It feels almost a bit squirrelly as every input does something, and you feel how much carbon damps things down. Takes a while to get used to, but it’s really nice.
- Speed wise, it feels good. I wouldn’t say it’s faster or slower than the NL. I’d say it’s easier to control, so you can ride it higher on the mast.
That’s a bit gushy, but I’m very happy with it so far.
I was desperate for info about this before I bought it, so fire away if you’ve got any questions I can help with.
@spark just posted this in another Cedrus thread, which is pretty darn interesting.
Lotta hum on my first downwind with it today, like much more whistling than I anticipated
I noticed that too, but not too bad. Mine was like a slightly squeezy noise. The site talks about this and does suggest a piece of rubber between the mast and board, like the Axis masts, but it doesn’t bother me enough to try that. Be interested to see if it damps it down though.
Apparently, some brands are more than others. What brand?
