The new Axis ARTv2 wings

I saw that they came out a couple of days ago… I’ll be interested to see how they shake out in the market. On paper they are more appealing to me than their last couple of wing launches. I’m a fan of many brands and Axis is one of them. My only complaint about Axis is the FB Axis group always has the most (secretly) biased reviews of all their products. Also seems they delete unfavorable feedback in the group. It always takes a couple months after their product launches to shake out fact from fiction.

They look like what we all asked for after the AP and Spitfire were released. I expect another trickle out of different sizes.

review (french) saying that it seems the 999v2 is faster than the 1121, and there is a gap for a 1099 v2. According to facebook it isn’t planned as they are revising their old foils.

I think Axis needs work on foils that are happy going slow, and fast, and not just fast. Axis niche has always been ultra span, which is in essence just enabled by their insanely stiff series of masts. These spans enabled low end, but as you scale these foils down they are too fast (talking ART, V2 and ART pro here)

Code and armstrong seemed to have gone a different direction, focussing on getting more out of narrow span foils, and I think it s a better direction.

Adrian Roper said “aha” when somebody posted a picture of this foil. It doesn’t look like a 1401, but I would buy an axis foil like this:

I had a session on a ART 999 v2 yesterday, it is fast and pretty fun, I’d agree with everything described in the review video. It’s probably the best first impression for an Axis foil that I’ve ridden, but certainly an ART in feel.

I guess they will go back through and revisit some of the other lines, HPS, PNG likely fill the gaps. Prefer if the strategy was to cover more ground with fewer but there you are.

I’ve been riding the V2 939 and I’ve taken it up to 26 MPH. I think I can take it faster with a smaller Skinny tail. Currently I’m riding the 362 Skinny with a .5 degree shim. But above 23 mph it just feels to big. I do have to say, the V2 ARTs seem to have more lift than the V1s… at least basing it on the ART 899 and 999 V1s. But I have only ridden the 939 V2.

This it the 939 at 25mph+. The comments has a 999 tag, but that was my mistake. The entire setup is a 90cm high mod mast, standard Ultrashort fuse, ART V2 939 and Skinny 362 with .5 degree shim.

Are you happy with 939 v2 or are you considering fireball? Also how do you compare 999 v1 with art v2 939? Do you think it was a big upgrade in performance?

Hi, the 939 definitely feels smaller than the V1 999. I rode both yesterday. I had to switch to the V1 999 because it got light. If you need more lift for lighter wind or smaller surf, go V2 999. I feel the V2s definitely perform better. They are faster, more slippery and also breach tips better. I feels they are less affected by turbulence in the water. I think they perform very well. That said, I don’t like the really pointy tips on them. For that reason, I likely would opt for a Fireball 1070 over the V2 999 that I don’t have yet. I’ve ridden the 1070 and it’s actually more similar to the V1 999, but much improved. More more efficient, and much less drag. I use the V1 999 in light wind and if I had the FB 1070, it would become my light wind foil.

I, a 190-200lb foiler, got the 1070 fireball, and 999v2 - tried ‘em with a sillyshort + 362/50 skinny tail. The 999v2 has lots of glide, possibly a bit more than the 1070. They both turned well, and were lots of fun. The 1070 feels more like a PNG style when pumping up, the 999v2 seemed to have so little lift you had to tilt it up to gain elevation - it’s a different pumping style for sure. I wasn’t able to get it up at all my first 20 minutes in 4’ ocean swell with 5-10mph winds, but was able to get up on flat water in 5-10mph winds on a 8’2" board.
If I had to choose one right now, I would go with the 1070, but I am happy to have both and will keep testing 'em.

i really like the Art v2s. i got the 999 right when they came out and it has been my go to foil for winging since i got it. i noticed it felt a little draggy over 19kts. got the 879 and now i feel like i have unlimited speed. the foil will probably go faster than i really want to go. only one session on the 879 in up and down conditions. it felt like it has a pretty high stall speed but if you can keep it over the stall speed, it feels frictionless.

Were you on Axis front wings before? Are you able to compare it to what you were previously on?

200lb Intermediate Mostly Flatwater comparison to the 999v2 and 1070fb

png 1310 Axis

  • much slower
  • lifts much more easily
  • works in 4-6kts of wind
  • not as surfy - turns in a flat style
  • pumps with a nearly flat pump

pngv2 1300

  • slower (but feels way faster and less draggy than the 1310)
  • lifts sooner
  • turns a bit better than the 1310, but not by a huge amount
  • pumps with a nearly flat pump

1070 fireball

  • pumps more flat
  • surfy
  • can complain that you’re only on an 800sqcm foil if the wind is low and you can’t get up

999v2

  • pumps on more of a curve to get started - way more tilt
  • surfy
Probably not a very useful comparison, but maybe for someone!

I was winging on Spitfires. The Art V2s are quicker and have better glide. The Spitfires have a surfier feel.
