Time to upgrade from 140 Progression?

I usually ride a 140 Progression on a 270 trench board that is a dup of a Kruzer with a foil drive max. I care mostly about pumping back out and linking waves. I can usually double up and get a couple triples in any session. I think the weight of the FD and dipping my pod are stopping me from pumping further. I’m sure my techinque needs improving as well. I want to move away from using the FD so i can unlock the full potential of the pump. My question is about the newer HA wings. I’ve only used my 140 and a 200. Will a new HA wing help me achieve my goal? I don’t know anyone with the newer Unifoil gear. I don’t really want to swich brands. Too much $$. I’m 6’ 165 lbs. Foiling in a 4/3 wetsuit in NorCal.

The 200 wasn’t a noticeable improvement over the 140?

How’s your pumping without the weight/drag of the FD?

If that’s your goal I say just put the hard work in without the FD and you’ll be amazed how much easier it is to pump without it and at your weight the 140 should be more than enough to pretty easily get consistent triples or more.

I’m a big believer in matching foil size to wave energy (so you can optimise for actually surfing the wave) and pump is a secondary concern. Yes a bigger more HA foil will increase pump and glide but I wouldn’t be rushing to fix it with more gear just yet with the 10kg Elephant still in the room.

Definitly. It isn’t as surfy as I like and I feel like it is so slow I end up pumping to try to keep up with the waves a lot of the time so I don’t use it much. I’m a little lost on what surf conditions it would be best for. Advice on that would be great too.

Great points here. So the 140 isn’t totally out of date compared to newer equipment? I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on a much better/easier experience by not shelling out for the newer wings.

I’m a code rider but I actually learnt on the progression series when they were first released.

Is there newer better wings on the market now, yes 100% But is the progression series still a totally workable option that would be able to achieve your goals with, also yes!

From memory they were a slow and very easy foil to ride, plenty of pump (albeit slow) I had to get off them as they had a pretty nasty forward pitching moment in waves with more energy (I’m in Australia you could kind of tell they were designed in Florida)

So yeah newer foils may make it “easier” but it’s far from a necessity as the progressions aren’t total trash and I sincerely believe the easier more obvious answer is to remove the weight and drag off your setup (as you mentioned your goal was to move on from it soon anyway)

I am also on Unifoil. Mostly FD due to conditions, but always look to drop FD when possible. (not as often as i like). I added the Evolutions after being on the progressions for awhile and switch back and forth often depending on conditions. My go to lately is the P125, I’m a bit lighter than you. I tried the Extra short fuse the other day and it was awesome. You may want to play around with fuses and stabilizers. It really changes things up. The regular short fuse really liven up the progressions too. I grabbed an extra stabilizer 3 pack cheep so I could chop some down, but keep an original set. I mostly ride the chopped ones now. Maybe a way to change the feel of your 140 on the cheep. Also play with mast location, I moved it up a bit and really unlocked the pump, and felt much better carving on wave faces.

p140 is a great wing

try short fuse. really makes it surfy.

i ride evo’s and they are nice for long glide. turn well too even higher ar. try an omen stabilizer. ahi is awesome very surf oriented. afterburner was nice too from uni.

I prone in Florida. I ride the Evo 155 mostly. Lately tried code. The p140 is still relevant and a fantastic wing, depending on your goals. My buddy was on his (p140) this week and loving it. I also saw that Mike Pedigo was riding it at the foil contest in Cocoa Beach last week and absolutely ripping on it… As good as anyone out there.
