Has anyone tried these yet for prone surfing?
I absolutely LOVE surfing on the Silks, but there are some (slower) days/conditions when more glide/pump would make for a better session.
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried them.

I absolutely LOVE surfing on the Silks, but there are some (slower) days/conditions when more glide/pump would make for a better session.
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tried them.
I’m also curious if anyone has tried them and compared to code
I went ahead and ordered the pure 900… will let you know how it goes when I get back to bali in a few weeks…! I can’t speak for comparison against code alas, would also love to know
yoo - I actually ‘forgot’ about this and got distracted by various swells… I last used the 900 V2 towing, and have given it another sanding/tuning. I’ll take it out proning tomorrow. Hope it’s now ‘silent’.
My optimism still remains that it’s something like the CODE 850s (which i ended up buying to fulfill that ‘need’ for the non-Silk days, but so far very much doubt it. The Pure V2’s seem to be made for fast high level winging, not pumping/surfing.
More to come! Incidentally I bought the pure 150 stab to go with it, debut tomorrow prone.
Other than speed what do you mean by high level winging? Assume its fast and has a lot of pop for airs? Everyone says its more “technical” than the silk, and while I’m sure that means “harder to ride,” Im very curious what the positive attributes are.
I know the silk isn’t meant for freestyle, but I jump mine all the time and it works fine. Wouldn’t call my freestyle “high level” by any means, but it gets the job done and surfs like a dream. Ive dinged mine up a bit (repaired them to 100%) and its not the most robust build (tips and trailing edge are pretty fragile), but those were all from reef/rock incidents and haven’t had any damage from jumping.
Hi Velociraptor - I’m not yet a winger so I don’t really know, myself. But what i would say is that the 900 V2 feels much heavier than the silk, and feels super robust and strong . I assume meant for extreme jumping. This is not to say the silks feel in any way ‘not strong’ for me, just lighter.I’ll weigh them and give metrics tomorrow.
Took it out, caught one wave, and despite my efforts to tune it, it’s still HORRIBLE. Going to send it back to AFS.
Weights:
Pure 900 1504 grams
Silk 850 1040 grams
Quite a difference there.
I think you’ll probably be looking for the new ENDURO line if you want more glide and pump
Going to be hard to resist the enduro… Would mean i have no need for the Lift HA120 i’ve been holding on to.
I’ve already taken delivery of a Code 850s which has pretty much ticked all the boxes for me, outside of the Silks. Code 850s AR is 9.5 and it pumps so well, turns really smoothly, breaches with ease. I’m very impressed with it as an all-round wing.
AFS kindly agreed to replace my squealing Pure 900, so i hope i can give it a fair comparison at some point. Highly doubt it will be anything like the Code though, i’m increasingly sure the Pure is just not meant to be a (competitive) prone wing.
Nope! The Pure 900v2 it’s meant to be a WING Ultimate foil !
I was able to enjoy the 900v1 in prone foiling thou - even in tow foiling in really nice waves -
The speed you get and if you can handle the turning at high speeds, was kind of a really nice different surf style feeling.
It all comes down to how good the fuse>wing connection is. So many brands have gone wrong there and I haven’t really seen how good the AFS connection is yet. As inconvenient as the Silk is for travel, taking that connection out of the equation is one less source of flex, weakness, play and headache.
If it’s more playful than the 800HA and easier to use as I’ve heard, I think it can make some sense to give it a try in wingfoiling. Just saw the @foilthegreats instagram and he dropped a series of stories winging the 750 ULTRA - looks rad - Wingtiping with no issue!
just to update this
AFS very kindly replaced my PURE900 with a perfectly tuned new wing. I have had a few tow sessions on it and absolutely love it. It’s different to the Silks as we know and would expect, feels fast and turns really nicely particularly with my new favorite stab (pure 150).
I’ll give it a go in some prone/pump conditions soon and further update.
Thank you AFS for your customer service - second to none.
the Pure V2 900 is a foil I didn’t like on first try, after riding the Silk 850 a lot. It’s completely different, super stiff, direct with lots of pop to jump and aggressive pump abilities, but more difficult to handle then the Silks. The opposite of smooth . In the meantime I love it and the V2 700 is even better, an early flying speed and freestyle machine starting at 15 knots.
How did they tune it? I have the old v1, and now the v2, and I just use the v1. I have ventilations issues at speed with the 900 V2, and the foil drops out at high speeds. It’s super unpredictable, and dangerous when dropping into a big wave for me. I have had the v1, and V2 pure 800, 1100, 900, and loved every foil except the v2 900. I also have the silks, and and waiting for my enduro’s.
I see in the photo that you have both the Silk 1050 and 850. I own the 1050. Under what circumstances do you choose to ride your 1050 rather than the 850? Would you recommend getting an 850 to someone who has the 1050? Do you ever wish you had the 650? It’s been a minute since your post, but I’d like to hear what you have to say seeing as you appear familiar with the AFS lineup. Thanks
I had the 1050. The Enduro 900 completely replaced that for prone foiling and i sold the 1050. No need to have it while the E900 did everything the 1050 did but with much more speed, glide and easier pump. The 850 i kept for winging when the wind and waves are on!
AFS kindly replaced the squealing 900v2 wing with a new perfectly tuned one.
A while back I lost my silk 850 (daily driver) in a particularly heavy/humbling shore break incident. In the absence of that silk, I was left with a lot of time proning and towing the 900v2 in a variety of condtions. It became my daily driver, when it was too big for the silk 1050 and too small for the silk 650. It’s a really fun wing. It pumps and glides really well (although needs good exit speed) and although it’s less forgiving than the silks, it is really fun to turn. Think long fast carves with burning quads, over ‘in the pocket’ style that comes naturally with the silks.
The 900v2 is a great wing. Different to the silks and enduros, but it is a very suitable wing for prone/surf foiling, with it’s own set of characteristics. I have no doubt that it’s top of the field for winging.
I agree with SaltyHaole for the most part. The E900 pretty much replaces the silk 1050, although i am very happy pumping and connecting waves on the 1050, and still haven’t managed to get my pumping on the E900 to that level. That said, the E900 absolutely rips in the surf. Very predictable breaching, amazing glide and smooth as… silk. It’s not the silk 850 though, which for me is the most fun ‘shortboard’ surf foil for prone.
The holy grail setup is the silk 650 and 132 tail for towing. Still the best feeling I’ve ever had on foil.
I dont have the 650. Its rare here on Oahu to get cracking winds and big waves, so the 850 does well 90% of the time i think only once last year where i “wished” i had a smaller front wing then the 850. I think it was way overhead waves with 30mph winds.
