Heading to Cancun Mexico in February for a wing. Looks like there’s some winging / kiting in the area. I can’t get a sense of the best place to go / stay. I’m going with my wife and 2 kids. I generally don’t like staying in an overwhelmingly touristy area. Curious if anyone can point me in the right direction of a neighborhood or area that’s good for families and has nice beaches (I’m ok with driving a bit to get to the winging).
Don’t know him, but this guy makes it look pretty good. Maybe reach out to him?
Hit up @Foilero_culero for the skinny!
I will say be careful of the customs at the Cancun airport. I was shaken down for $100 because I had “3 sets of gear” which was above the limit of 2 sets of gear. In reality I had one board/foil and 3 wings. They will find something to get some money off you. Try to blend in to a large crowd and to the left side as you walk away from the baggage claim past the customs area ( which is to the right) and out to where the rental cars are.
Make sure you follow this to the letter and hope you don’t get stopped
I was in Playa del Carmen last year and it was terrible for wingfoiling. Not enough wind most days. I did not bring equipment but tried to rent. I found one school/rental place at a crappy beach full of weed (it’s forbidden where people swim), with outdated equipment.
I heard that there is a less crowded peninsula north of Cancun where kite surfing is supposed to happen. Probably wingfoiling too. You probably should look there.
I think that peninsula is Isla Blanca. My understanding is that its mainly shallow, flatwater lagoon riding (twin tips), but I haven’t been.
Writing my report after ending up staying in Playa del Carmen for a week. The one school there indeed has old crap gear. Nice guys though. Wind was actually pretty strong, 15-20 knots 3-4 days of 7 in Feb. They rely on thermals and WindAlert was often way off in their readouts. So don’t trust that necessarily. Tons of kiting just north of the local beach Playa Punta Esmeralda. Guys out daily.
I think I know the school u are talking about, they focus more on kiting maybe that’s why they might not have the best wing gear…
Next time come to sunny Cancun and we will show u around
We had some or this lately
I think you are right about the focus on kiting. Next time will come to Cancun!
Bottom line, I think there’s plenty of fun winging / kiting to be had in the Cancun metro area. And don’t just trust WindAlert… they get thermals that don’t read out well there.
