Foil Repair Advice?

Would like to know how to repair the trailing edges too.
It’s super tricky with the new ones that angle back up (flap down). Not sure of the technical term.
I noticed this ever subtle angles on my 2023 700-900cm² surf Gong foils when trying to dull the trailing edges and do a Donaldson’s on them.

Thanks for your time.

Your second technique, the “100% repair”, that’s what I had in mind.

I found this video , and I may wanted to try this technique ( 9:35 ). He press the ding between two pieces of wood with a clamp, then fill with carbon resin mixture before sanding, intead of the clear tap technique

That could work too. As the other poster mentioned, it gets tricky with trailing edges that have a lot of sculpting (reflex?) and you might want to cut the wood pieces down to the minimal size to follow the curvature as much as possible. Let us know how it turns out!

Repair done !
Except for the repaired area being a bit lighter, I’m quite happy with the result. What I did:

  1. Sanded and cleaned the area.
  2. Taped the underside.
  3. Wet the area with epoxy resin and placed small pieces of carbon fiber.
  4. Sanded with coarse grit, then finished with finer grit wet sandpaper."

Any idea how to get the area darker ? Varnish ?

That turned out about as well as it could have. Well done.

They probably use some pigment in the clear coat. Not sure how to replicate it.

Personally I’d call it a win and ride it. Whenever I have the temptation to keep going to make it perfect I screw something else up, so I’ve learned that lesson the hard way - but that’s just me. Layering more clear would mean more sanding and every time I go that route I risk oversanding and going backwards.

You can add black pigment to the the resin during the repair process, very easy.
Or, add black pigment to the matt clear coat after the repair, Bit harder but looks good.

And to the foil manufacturers, please be like Axis and apply decals etc only to the top surface, it’s usually the bottom surface that gets damaged and decals make invisible repairs difficult.

Thanks.

Yes I am really happy how it turned out, and I will not try to do it perfect ! Already learn this lesson on surfboard repairs
