Couple questions for those that use foildrive. I have a max foildrive setup but am looking for a new board and wing possibly but wanted some advice before dropping all the $$. I purchased a sunova 5’3" 49L board to start last year for mostly lake riding, trying to better pump and wake thief. I feel like the board is too large for my goals but also did not want to get something too small to begin with. Any thoughts on board size for my ultimate use case? Also I am on the Armstrong 1190 and think I might try the new UHA 970 for better glide and connecting waves? any other recommendations? I am 175lb and have been riding for a few years so intermediate rider but want to put some time on foil this year to really progress? thanks in advance
You could easily drop 20lts from that 49lts board with no ill effect, as long as you don’t reduce length. Going too short makes life difficult and a slightly longer board doesn’t effect swing weight much.
I have been riding a Lift 5’ X 40L board for my FD setup on the lake and have been loving it. I’m 150Lbs and pretty much exclusively wake the thief on my Lift 170HA.
Personally, I think the 5’ range is the ideal spot for FD boards. It felt much larger than my 4’ wake foil setup at first, but I have come to really like the extra length and how it helps me draw out my turns. Also, the shape and length are what I look at first on an FD board. Lastly, volume, but I’m pretty light and have zero issues getting up and going on my Lift board. I have been toying with the idea of getting a tranch board in the 4’11”-5’ range, but have been pretty happy with my current setup, so I haven’t wanted to spend the money.
Also, I have to assume that the lake vs. the ocean would affect volume due to the water’s buoyancy, so I’m not sure how the chats on the boards’ websites relate to freshwater.
