Anyone in the Gorge parawinging the 615s? I’m having a hard time finding much feedback on it. 720s is my daily driver now but I do wonder how the 615s would fare on some big days. Never see it on the used market either but I kind of think that’s because it’s less common, the local shop has never tried it and will only special order it.
Never used it in the Gorge, but often in waves proning & boogying. I’d say there’s a fairly linear progression between the 850, 720, & 615. So there won’t be any surprises. It just rides like a smaller 720 ![]()
So it’s more cowbell? Perfect.
Now I just gotta find someone who owns it and will let me take it for a spin ![]()
I’d think at your weight, you’d want to try an 810 or 890x and keep the bigger S series for the lighter wind days. Certainly be a good test/read for the forum, if you’re willing!
Brian what has made you jump onto Code, just after something new? You sounded really stoked with the AFS gear. How do you find it compares?
Iʻd like to hear too! You also gave rave reviews about the new Lift wings. I only ever liked the 150hax and 180hax from Lift. Iʻd love to hear how the “old” S-series is stacking up against the new hotness.
I ride Code and love the 720s for prone, but couldnʻt pump that thing last time I was riding it. Had to size up to the 850s to link. The 720s I can throw my weight at in turns like a shortboard and intentionally skid the tail out a bit. The 850s if big enough that I have to ride “with” it a little more, which is unfortunate. Iʻd love to try the 615s! I didnʻt notice enough of a difference between the 720s and the 810x to give the X-series much attention.
Good questions.
The x foils just aren’t right for me. They move differently than I like.
The last few years on AFS I’ve been very dedicated to developing my personal style. This year my goals are focused on taking my surfing style and injecting as much speed into it as possible, without losing my form. So, I had to make some changes to my kit.
At the core is the 11.9mm 78SSS v2 from One Ocean. I’m about 250 miles into testing and reviewing that mast and am yet to find a flaw of any sort. This mast, with its speed and 102mm chord sets the tone for the pace and maneuverability I am looking for.
With it I paired the 720s short fuse and crisp flex 110 tail. A remarkable combo to be honest. Any medium+ to big day in the Gorge I consider this to be pretty reliable to link for up to 5 miles down the river. Which, is why I am interested in the 615s. Forcing myself to take on even more speed, have to react faster in the swell, and forcing myself to read my surroundings better. I do predict the 615s will be ideal in the spring.
When conditions are softer, I stay on the same mast but pivot to the Florence 110x with short carve 20 tail. This is also a fast and extremely loose setup due to the short chord of the 78sss v2. Surfing fast on this foil in small to medium gorge swell has been very challenging, much harder than learning the 720s which felt pretty welcoming TBH. The challenge of this foil makes the 720s that much easier, and consequently makes my movement on the 720s that much more stylish.
The Vario 120 was phenomenal. However, it’s quite close in size to the 720s. The flex 110 pushed the 720s over the top while Lift was lacking in tail options to make it competitive.
So, it’s all about goal setting and finding the gear that can perform AND challenge me to develop. I think these two foils matched with the One Ocean mast are perfect for what I am trying to achieve.
I’m riding the 720s now and test the 615s it’s too small for me but I would say I agree with above it captures the exact feeling of consistency but just increase in speed. I found the 615 too fast in the surf so it should fit what you’re after in lots of power and after a challenge.
Funny I also didn’t quite gel with the X from code as much as I wanted to. They are great but quite specific. Always want to be on a rail which makes them less versatile. I’m straddling CodeS for downwind and versatility and hanging onto my silk v1 850 for prone where the 810x didn’t quite feel I could love it haha
Thanks for the detailed write up. How does the 720s compare to the AFS foils you were on, aside from feeling faster?
Scratch that above answer. Sometimes I write too much ![]()
Short and sweet:
The One Ocean mast is stiffer, thinner, shorter chord, silent, never ventilates or falters. Best mast I’ve ridden and that’s the core of every days experience.
The 720s is more versatile. Better low end, better range, glide, speed, works in high flow river conditions as well as low flow. It’s an all-rounder that doesn’t feel like it’s throwing away performance.
The AFS stuff seemed like it did best as a larger quiver of foils with each one having a narrower, more specific use.
I’m enjoying going to the river most days with only 1 foil in the car and knowing I’ll have a blast no matter what the conditions are.
This is what I was going through two years ago starting out. As a beginner, I found Lift gear unstable. I eventually got a handle on the 150HAX and 180HAX, but ended up moving to Code. I wanted something that made me feel like I wasnʻt fighting the foil. Code seems pretty user friendly for the level of performance it has. I also dislike Liftʻs tails. Being able to adjust fuse length and tail independently was great. I could probably ride a monobloc now, but probably not as I keep chopping away at my current tails.
Iʻm on the list to get one of those Axis → Code titanium adapters. I was initially thinking of getting the Axis pro mast to complement my standard Code 75. Iʻve been using wide span wings like the 1725s for pump foiling, though I doubt Iʻll go any wider than 1300mm for any discipline. I wouldnʻt mind getting some turning/glide for prone too. Would the 78SSS be able to handle the 1725s or 1250r at 77kg?
Thats a @Jacko question. He’s great about responding to his inquiries via email if he’s not watching here.
Thank you, definitely wasn’t looking for any AFS bashing.
I’m on the 2025 One Ocean SSS riding KT, and like Gibbon I’m waiting for the titanium Code adapter. I’ve picked up a 980s which I’m hoping gives me the speedy glide I never found in the Atlas 960.
Your recent posts have me thinking the 720s could be a replacement for my Nomad 830 on powered up days. I (very briefly) tried the 810x with 110R and was surprised by the glide, would love to unlock more of that.
Edit: My main reason for moving away from KT is the alu fuse. The salt water is eating it before my eyes, no matter what I do!
I think you’ll find the Code S to be a very different feel than the Nomad. Keep us posted on how it goes!
I hope so! Happy to trade a little turning ability for better speed and glide.
It also helps that other locals are on Code, so I essentially have a quiver to tap into from 740x up to 1130s.
980s is a great wing. Real all rounder and still turns well. I think that’s the theme of all the S wings.
I do think the 720s is about the limit I’d want for speed on prone. If I was gonna get a wing to throw turns at head high plus, I’d want it slower. Small Silks sound perfect for that. I’m not linking waves at that size anyway, just wanna pump back near the takeoff.
Silk 650 v1. Legendary. You can slow it down with a draggy tail if desired and I don’t think it loses anything in the turns.
Have you considered going with the One Ti fuse and the Surge 890? Everyone seems pretty jazzed on it and it’s not stupid overpriced like most of Axis wings.
I haven’t as the second hand market for Code gear is just so good in Australia.
Nobody locally has the surge but one of the guys just sold his Axis gear to move to Code. I tried a smallish fireball and art V2, both had amazing glide but quite unforgiving.
I’m very interested in seeing a Surge comparison to the S series. On paper, they are very close in dimensions. Just like the S series, they’re 9.5AR and I think they’d be too fast for pumping surf, but for the everyday stuff most of us ride in, probably a good choice.
