How does Mikeslab gear compare to modern gear? It’s hard to get a sense of how many folks are riding mikeslab gear and how it compares to the high aspect stuff that’s coming out these days.
I weigh about 65 kg, and wing with a mikeslab 700 when it’s above 17 knots. I’ve also tried some high AR axis foils and they were fun. The 700 has been fun on stronger wind days, very fast and very stable. I’m looking for something that I can use on lighter days (12-17 knots) and eventually learn to parawing. I like to catch swells in the bay area. Should I stick with Mikeslab and pick up an 825 (which may be a design from 2024?) or look at other brands?
I feel like Mikeslab is buttery buttery smooth - one of the nicest feeling foils & masts when you’re powered or gliding. But to me it lacks that oomph & resistance in the pump. They also turn really nicely, but it’s a feeling of “precision” rather than “loose & goofy” which is how I like my surf wings.
If I was only a winger, absolutely no question I would have a 700 & 825 as my only foils and I would be the happiest foiler in the world. But… there’s more to life than winging which is why I like my other foils more
Edit: I see you’re in the Bay Area. Isn’t it compulsory that you ride MikesLab? Won’t the other Bay Area MikesLab people excommunicate you?
ML is a great foil if it does everything you need. Many of us went to F4 for low end and similar Mikeslab feel. I like disassembly, switching tails, and more foil options than a single plane, and no wait.
