Lately, I’ve been using the short fuse on my downwind runs, and I can definitely say that it makes big wings like the 960 Atlas and 1130 feel faster and more lively, especially on light days. In this video, I’m riding the 960 with the 155 Nomad tail, and I had one of the best sessions I’ve had in a while.
I’m looking for some advice on proning and pumping in turbulent water with the gear I have.
I ride the Atlas 680, 790 , 960 with 145 (mostly) and 170 atlas tails and always on the Long fuse , although I do have a short.
I find that these all have a mind of their own when pumping in turbulence. Maybe it’s a mast stiffness issue? I’ve never had this issue with my previous setup and I’m wondering if it’s a tuning issue?
Anyone using the baseplate shim? I’m on the 77 mast with atlas 1130, 63 fuse and 170 atlas tail. Light wind SUP downwind. Was thinking of trying the baseplate shim with thick side in the rear. Any advice or experience is appreciated
I use 1 degree baseplate shim thick end forward for mast rake winging when I want to go fast, long upwind reaches and surfing good waves. More nose up position helps steep turning, upwind slapping on large swell and the tendency of nose down at high speed. I pull out the shim for parawing, light wind, downwind which with my boards, tuning, weight etc puts my board slightly nose down. Helps getting up on foil as well as pumping. The only way to know really is to try it, give it a chance / yourself time to feel difference/adjust. May take tweaking mast position a touch.
At my weight of 93kg, I prefer the 77cm mast for a little more stiffness and response when SUP foiling and parawinging in more turbulent water. I do find the 85cm mast a little more “busy” underfoot when winging in turbulent water with the spannier foils. It’s fine in less surface energy/wonk. I’m betting the new Race mast solves a lot of this busy feel as I felt something similar on Armstrong masts prior to the Performance mast release, which unlocked more performance out of any of the foils you bolted on to them. They settled right down and felt much more precise on the stiffer, high performance mast. If the same holds true for the Race mast, all the KT foils will get a nice performance bump (despite already being so nice to ride). I usually wing with the 1 degree shim for more nose up/neutral position when going fast. I find the Atlas 960 will noticeably fly a little nose down without the shim as you get into the higher end of its range. I’ve really enjoyed both the Atlas and Nomad range and keep discovering new feels from these lines. Super curious to try a Solus, especially on the new mast.
I’m using the KD marlin 13 which is great all round.
But I’d like to find a more carvy option. I have a AFS Silk 38 HA chopped down to 33 that I need to try. Other option I have in mind are Nomad 155 obviously and Mako Carve.
I strongly recommend the CRISP 130 !!
I’ve only used the Atlas 145, never ordered the Nomad 155 since I’m only 70kg and the 155 seemed like too much area for what I’m used to.
IMO the 130 Crisp is just better in loosening the 700 - no locks when rolling - feels smoother and faster - looser - and the low end decrease it’s barely noticed. I use this 130 for my whole quiver Atlas 570 & 790 / Nomads 700 & 830.
If you order one - bare in mind that with the standard crisp adapter you need to add +3 to the stab.
This means, if you’re using the Nomad 700 (-1.5°) + 3° - then you use a white 1.5° stab shim + the crisp adapter.
