The KT gear has arrived in the far far west, and it’s absolutely been worth the wait! Really cool to feel how much things have leveled up with these new designs.
Currently have the Atlas 1130 for river / dock / light wind dw sessions and the Atlas 790 for prone and 15 knots + downwind runs. Also the Atlas 170 and Nomad 155 tails.
Below link shows the Atlas 790 front and 170 rear flying in 18 knots Perth bumps.
The stringy fuse thing sounds interesting. Are there any disadvantages of using the stringy fuse compared to the regular KT fuse (weight, hydrodynamics etc)?
I haven’t received it yet. I’ll report back when i get it. It’s likely similar in weight and drag. There is probably some risk of a worse fit. It’s also slightly more expensive
I bought a tail from ad3p and paired it with a custom stringy fuse for the takuma kj2 front wing and it was horrible. It had so much drag i never used it after the first try. Not sure if it was the stringy fuse or if it was the tail. The tail actually looked super nice quality and came with a lot of shims.
Code 75cm mast is 74cm from the bottom of the mast plate to the center of the leading edge of the front wing (it was an R wing). The KT Carbon 70cm mast is 73cm from bottom of the plate to the center of the leading edge of the front wing (Atlas) - KT 77cm mast is 80cm correspondingly. Hope it helps
What size Atlas would be recommended for a prone micro day stay up forever wing? 1340 has similar dims to Axis 1201 which Ive heard is perfect for that, but maybe 1340 is slow from all the camber?
I’ve pre-ordered some KT foils and I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Ice as creeped-in in the canadian maritimes and the foil season is over. I don’t have anything to do other than to shape a few boards for next spring. To correctly install my mast track boxes, I preferably need the distance between the mast and the lift point of the frontwing.
I wonder if there’s some folks that could gave me any kind of measurements ? Mast to front 1/3 of the FW or Mast to front of fuselage will do.
I have spent a few sessions on the nomad 700 (63cm fuse, kd13r flat, 85cm carbon mast), proning and winging, ankle to head high.
TLDR This (air)foil is most efficient and happy in low to mid speed range, to carve and pump in the waves without ever stalling despite it’s small size/span. It can go very fast and still carve at top speed, but it will not give you this dragless gliding feel towards the top end like flatter foil section (enduro).
PROS
Huge speed range, with equal foot pressure at all speeds
Very friendly low end. Possible to pump from a hole back up to speed without burning too much energy
Very friendly top end, easy to control and still super nimble
Very friendly pumping, super instinctive, tolerates big pushes, approximate input, high angles of attack, without stalling
Great turning and best in class foam/breach recovery (>sk8)
Solid connection points and stiff setup (close to Afs, but not quite like uhm)
Bomber construction (it seems so far after shorebreak battles) and not so pointy tips
Price point
CONS
Very draggy feel on the top end, not super efficient on the top 30% of the speed range (parachute/break feel). That is in contrast with an enduro 700 that feels very free and most efficient in the top 50% of the speed range. If you are in a big wave focused on carving, this loss of efficiency is not a problem though.
Not the most glidy airfoil (?) althought tests of the atlas are incoming, the nomad is (only) AR 8-9.
Aluminum fuselage (corrosion, tefgel++)
(Takes a little while to get used to this airfoil proning (1h))
Overall, this foil probably fits people carving breaking waves, proning or winging. For freefly winging and downwind, maybe people will prefer something like an enduro (?) But what a radical design choice, really impressed with this commitment and how much it’s bringing to the scene.
Will report back once I have spent time on the atlas, it will be a more fair comparison with the enduro. It’s taking time to get kt’s in europe though, deliveries are delayed to march at the moment. Posting the latest gear feedback there Remy (@foilstate) • Instagram photos and videos
Can anyone report if they have spent time on the Atlas 1340? How are you finding it? Any discipline and any comparisons to other big wings would be appreciated.
I’ve been on the Nomad 980 which has been great for winging and wake, great low end and glide compared to the foil I was on previously. But I’m looking at options for lighter winds and small wave SUP. I was a bit unsure about buying in to KT with the mast length options, but turns out the KT 77 is equivilent to a 79 in previous brand and works well for what I want.
I’ve not tried the 1340 yet but have spent a lot of time on the atlas 1130. It is a phenomenal light wind foil for DW. I’ve had a blast on days where no one else could ride. I look forward to the 1340 for dock starts this summer but could not imagine that I would ever need it in a powered situation.
