The 1210 pumps great. I always found it stable, good glide and easy to connect multiple waves. The progression 170 is faster, more efficient and rolls thru turns quicker and more intuitively, but still has the low end like the 1210. Feels slick in the water and wants to glide. I notice my pump cadence is way slower on the 170 which equates to less energy I have to put in. It’s an evolutionary step forward.
I’ve got a few sessions winging on the h2 190 at this point. Coming from the 1095 as my primary foil. I really like the 1095 and was seeking something that turned as well as the 1095, had better top end, and importantly more solid connections. I’d say the h2 190 addresses all of my requirements, but there are some things that could be compromises, or I could just need more time figuring it out and getting used to it. I am finding it to be quite a learning curve. I wouldn’t characterize it as a forgiving foil. I hope that means it will make me a better foiler!
In comparison, once I dialed in the H800 (which I also really like) I felt totally comfortable on it and found that it was a fairly intuitive foil. The h2 has been less intuitive for me thus far.
Setup:
I’m winging the h2 with the standard fuse, Cedrus mast (same as 1095) and I’ve tried a couple tails that I’m used to including the 178 and KD 13.5. So far the 1 degree (+ lift) shim is working best for me (compared to 0.5 degree on the 1095) and my mast position is about 0.25” forward of the Takuma which is getting close to the front of my tracks (back foot is just in front of the mast center). I like a lot of front foot pressure, but I have also found the h2 to be a lot more backfooted and less lifty than other foils I’m used to.
Pros:
- turns great. I’d say it’s as loose as the 1095 and feels fairly similar in the turn profile. The turning is really nice in swell where I can move around the wave very quickly and with agility.
- better speed than the 1095. Glides very well when it’s at speed. Upwind maneuvers are much easier with the added glide.
- connections are very solid. No play at all (for what it’s worth the Cedrus connection works perfectly). BUT one of my fuse connections had some fouled threads when it arrived (I think there might have been some clear coat on them?) and I had to clean them up. I think its all good now.
- jumps well. Good pop and feels so much more solid on landings vs 1095 and h800.
Compromises:
- notably “bobbly” in chop. Much moreso than the 1095. I guess it’s not surprising because it’s a bigger foil, but it can be a nervous ride.
- the span is good and so it doesn’t breach often, but when it does the breaching is dramatic. It might be the additional speed, but I’m finding that it does not recover well from a breach. The 1095 was pretty easy in this regard.
- it’s a big foil yet low end is worse than the 1095 it’s probably only a bit better than the h800 (which I find has good low end). I’ve shimmed and adjusted mast to add lift and it has helped, but it seems to want a lot of power to get going. It wants to be ridden very powered in general (whether waves or wind).
I might say that this foil is a better downwind foil than the 1095 due to the speed and agility but the forgiving nature of the 1095 makes it an easier surfing foil?
Interested to hear other peoples opinions.
Torn on whether to get a Prog 140 or an h2 150 to supplement this. Leaning towards the Prog I think. I don’t really need much more speed than the 190 and from what I know of the 190 I have to think the h2 150 needs a LOT of power.
Hi guys,
Got the hyper 190/170 and vyper 150.
Ive got the 190 and 150 dialed in, but struggling with the 170 and find it twitchy in the turns. Im winging, 80kg and on the 33cm fuse. I have the G10 14" 3 pack and a cut down race tail.
Any, suggestions on how to dial my 170 in?
Regards
Mike
hey mike , you dont mention what shim you using ?
Clifford,
On the cut down race tail either 0 or 1 if light wind. On my 150 vyper 0 or .5 with the shunt.
Not found the right combo on the 170 yet for a controlled turn.
Cheers
Mike
I have the 3 tail pack and shunt with zero shim is good, I would do shiv but my tracks don’t go far enough forward for the balance
First sess on the Hyper2 170 until I get my Prog140.
Feels nice : good glide and I like how it turns.
I rode it with +2 shim and shiv tail to avoid speed stall issue because it was tricky (current, seaweed, etc…). I need to test different tuning to see how it goes.
How much have you chopped the race tail? I chopped mine to 13.5 and with 1 degree shim it gives the 190 a lot more low end and makes pumping easy. I use it when I’m in light and less powerful conditions but I much prefer how the smaller tails turn and glide with that foil (178 with 0.5 degree shim is my favorite now). How do you find the 14 compares?
Hi,
Mines chopped to 15" with 1 or 0 degree with the 190 depending on strength of wind. I prefer it to the 14, but not by much.
The one I’m struggling with is the 170, I can’t seem to get a consistent turn on it regardless of stab. But then I do tend to default to my 150 vyper which turns a lot better, so maybe it’s me.
The 178 ur using is what?
