What is the future of surf foiling events? (GWA Cape Verde)

I focus less on judging who is the best. Just look at the innovation. Cash and Malo put on a spectacle!

things happening so fast I’d say sooner

Cash at Jbay has gone viral on the SA surf chats, people mostly amazed. It does make me wonder if winging can go beyond kite and windsurfing to attract eyeballs. On face value it may look like more of the same eg kite, and windsurf

I went back and compared it to a few of the big J-bay rides. Tom Curren, Jordy Smith, Felipe Toledo. The surfboard has some advantages, mainly getting barreled. The foil though has the advantage of speed. Considering the fact that most people only want to go fast and straight on that wave, the foil might just have an advantage there.

I reckon the main advantage would be not paddling round with the men in grey suits out there.

Revisiting just how perfectly correct this was

watching this I think the future of surf foiling is tow (strapped) foiling

see 6min in, I found that to be pretty interesting to watch

the winging is pretty crazy, but it’s not that different from windsurfing?

the tow section seemed more expressive (or something), and reminded me of snowboarding.

Should wear a kevlar wetsuit though

I think strapped surf events will have broader popular appeal than regular prone. It reminds me of park freestyle snowboarding. I prefer the look of really good surf foiling, but the market is larger for more radical and obvious moves and especially airs

Cash went strapless that contest and was ripping too. Being able to drag your board around by the straps is pretty huge though.
