Howdy everyone!
I’ve been using a Cab h-1300 mk2 for SUP DW lately. Though this brand wouldn’t be my top choice if I had a spare $3k lying around, it’s been serving me well for the short-period, stacked type wind bumps I get in the winter storms. I have no problems paddling it up, and have gotten to like it at lower speeds. But I find it gets to be too much when the bumps get to be bigger–some inherent flex, a big wing, and maybe some connection play.
I have a Cab h-1000, and a Cab h-1050 mk 2 . For those that have experience with either of these, Which of these wings do you think I’d have more success with, paddling up in bigger bumps? Thanks!! I also have both the mk2 180 stab, and the older h180 mono bloc stab.
Cheers!
Cab Hollow 74cm
Using an Appletree Skipper DW 7’7"x20. Just unsure of the jump in difficulty paddling up the smaller foil. I’ll only try it in bigger (waist/chest high wind bumps). Big system in my area tomorrow, so I’ll probably get the opportunity!
I’ve been on the SUP program since May, mainly surfing mush in RI. Using Cab Foils: started on the 1050, got a 1300 to get on more waves, back down to the 1050 as the daily, now 850 more regularly.
I’m finding after switching to 850 that the wave count has remained the same but the ride is way more controlled and playful for my 170lbs and skill. Better turning. A little less glide but the pump is better on 850.
I haven’t tried the 1000 but know some prefer it to the 1050.
The Cabrinha Foils have treated me well across multiple disciplines the last few years. They have a big speed range, are intuitive, and have helped my progress a ton!
Thanks for the info, Nick! I’ll give the 1050 a go, the next SUP DW opportunity I get!
To update: I’ve been using the Cab H-1050 with the V-180 stab (shimmed .25deg. positive/LE down) for my DW runs lately, even if marginal. Once I made this step down, I’ve been surprised at the fact that it seems as easy to paddle up as ehe 1300, and better in every way (pump, glide, turn, speed). I guess just another confirmation that downsizing a bit may not actually be more challenging, it could help.
