Axis Foil Reviews:

I only dock started it once. I would describe it as big and heavy. But yes it did glide for a long way. Glide doesn’t mean slippery to me though. I would describe glide more as it won’t sink down.

Smooth and slippery glide machine sounds more like the 1099 to me. I haven’t ridden that though.

1150 is not slippery, nor is the 1010, 910, or 850PNG. They just have very low stall speed and slow easy pump. 1150 is amazing for easy dockstarts but that’s all I would use it for personally.

ART wings and even HPS wings are more “slippery” through the water but also higher stall speed.

I rode the Cabrinha HA800 the other day and that thing was super slippery like the Lift120 or ART899.

Still haven’t tried the 1099ART which is supposed to be quite the experience!

Ok that makes sense, the 1150 is very easy for dock/rock/beach start and super forgiving but just feels sticky through the water, catching bumps is fine but not great… wondering if it’s the scratches. Will report back after some repairs.

(to do the 1min pump challenge, maybe I’m lazy but it’s a lot of energy to do it!)

The 1099 is super slippery, incredible, just flies, but needs to go way faster. Only tried a few times

I’ve heard rumors about a new axis surf wing coming out. Has anyone heard any details on this? I wonder what sizes they plan to release and what series fuse it will use.

Updated review for the PNG850:
Took this on a surf trip and got a bunch of winging and prone sessions on it as well as many sessions here at home in small surf in Florida since the last review. Once again the low end is fantastic, if there is whitewater I can get up and foil. Turning/roll is awesome and so is the yaw, you can really carve this wing and bang big roundhouses especially since it’s so slow compared to the HA wings, you get to play in the pocket and it’s the most like short-boarding I’ve found. The negative (huge for many) is that it’s slow and basically has bad glide. Once you stop pumping you are coming down soon. Breeching is great and the range is awesome, just be ready to stay high and pump between waves. The good news is your connecting turn to the wave is epic and then it’s an absolute shred-fest once you are in the pocket!

A negative tail shim is best (opposite what they provide) and I’ve found with a positive shim or even no-shim it is way too slow and horrible pump.

Awesome for me winging with lots of stability, low-end, and fun on waves. BUT it’s slow and lots of wingers don’t like that. My focus is surf performance for both prone foiling and wing foiling.

Thanks for the update!

Do you end up on the png850 more the the hps830 for prone? Have a png910 inbound and wondering about the 830.

I’ve found the 1150 to be very slow and not worth much time once getting in tune with the 1099, which is very fun and incredibly efficient. Slippery is the word. Once up to speed it just soars!

HPS830 is awesome prone for fast turns but can be tough to connect waves, has to be going super fast to pump well and any mistake is game-over.

We use HPS830 primarily for tow-surfing and winging bigger waves, or kiting.

HPS 1050 is an awesome foil for me. Winging, it is really predictable and works great in the 12-22 knot range. I am around 15 days or so on the water now coming from a surfing and windsurfing background, making strong heel side and toe side gybes, learning on weak sides. I have ridden a bunch of BSC and Armstrong foils. Based on what I have ridden, just feels like it is really easy to push yourself but not feel uncomfortable or have things feel twitchy. I am riding the newer 400 tail with it.

ART 799 is my favorite foil to wing with, it’s fast and turns well. It’s so fast that I was ventilating on the 19mm/820 mast quite a bit while winging. I now use the 16mm mast with it and haven’t vented/faceplanted yet. We just towed into overhead waves yesterday and it was a blast.

ART 899 is my current prone foil, I use it with a Nolimitz 78cm mast. It’s fast and turns well with the advanced crazy short fuse. I get in this crazy zone high on the mast and it just wants to glide and pump! it freaks me out and I want to keep it there forever. I’m connecting more with this setup and having a blast.

ART 999 is my winging foil for lighter winds, fast and great glide. Doesn’t turn well but I love lufting the wing and pumping/gliding on swells.

ART 1099 is my light wind winging weapon. This foil glides for days! Almost as fast as the 999 but way more glide. It’s a blast lufting my hand wing and pumping/gliding on swells. I can keep up with my 19 year old son pumping on swells with this thing. With a 6m sling shot v3 hand wing I can get on foil in less than 10kts.

HPS 880 is a fun foil to prone and wing with. It turns well, but isn’t as fast as the ART’s. I just winged it with the advanced crazy short fuse and it was a blast turning on swells. It also gets up on foil easier than the ART’s in light wind except for the 1099. I have yet to prone on it with the advanced fuse. Work seems to be interfering with a lot of my foiling plans!

PNG 1150 was the easiest foil to wing in light winds that I’ve ever tried. Stupid easy, I would laugh when I was on that thing, if my board was moving forward then it would rise onto foil in a breath of wind. But it was agonizingly slow and turned like a cargo ship. I sold it pretty much right away. The 1099 is way more fun for me with the wing.

I"m about 80kg, wing on KT custom, Jimmy Lewis Custom, Kalama E3, red manta and prone on an Amundson.

Agree after trying the 1099 and getting to grips with it I have very little interest in the 1150 at all, 1099 and 899 are a nice combo. Only reason I haven’t sold it is to learn DW whenever that happens.

The 1300 is a much better beginner downwind wing over the 1150. Significantly better glide and pump, and could be a light wind option for a while as you learn. The 1150 doesn’t have the same attributes unfortunately I found.

Any tail recommendations? Have tried 400 Speed, old freeride tails, 375 progressive, and only really the 375 was a match for 1099 and 899.

I’d like to find a good match for the 899 and advanced fuse. Maybe an 300 or 325 Progressive. Are there any aftermarket alternatives or is that a hassle?

My experience with Axis is limited but good. I’m a heavy:(100kg/220lbs) on a good day. My favorite foil is the Armstrong 925 in waves, but after deciding to learn to dockstart on Wake Thief 1150 package I decided to try it in the smallest of surf… Knee occasionally better and it works like a champ… Calling surf 12-14 inches… Notes of change went from the 470 pump tail to the 425p to the 325p keeps getting easier to turn but it’s no Porsche. Also need to get the short mast for the smallest of waves.
After seeing Jermey Wilmotte’s 1 hour ride and hearing the pod, I decided the art 1099 with advanced fuse is . The armie 1125 works and is fast but it’s twitchy at times and great others (love/hate sessions). If I like then the 999/899 maybe in my future the armies will go on sale.

You mean 1 to 2 and firing!

Curious to know if anyone has experience on the older axis 1000HA. That’s been my go to prone foil (picked it up used) for stomach high and smaller surf. Currently have it on the ultra short fuse with 400 tail. I dont have any experience on any of the newer wings so I’d be curious to hear what others that have ridden it and maybe the ART series have to say. How do they compare? Am I seriously missing out? Would love to try an 899 but is such a big investment since I would also need to upgrade to the black series fuse.

Also curious about how tails improve turning. The 1000HA doesn’t seem to roll very well compared to my SP860. Do tails help loosen up things in the roll axis?

I rode the 900 and a 760 a lot. the 900 definitely pumps good but turns like a school bus. The ART wings are better in almost every way. Less drag. More glide. The pump is slightly more technical. Less room for error til you figure it out.

A smaller progressive tail will for sure loosen up the roll, but you’re still riding a generation 1 front wing. So don’t expect miracles.

ART1099 Review:
Wow what a fun foil! After listening to the casey podcast I was interested in this foil for bumps/open ocean and even prone foiling tiny waves. Bought one and I’ve proned this wing a few times and winged it probably a dozen times in different conditions (including this morning).

Pump and glide: just fantastic. Glides on shin high bumps in the ocean. Pumping this wing is an amazing feeling, like cranking up gears on a roadbike and pushing hard faster and faster!

Turning: Bad compared to surf foils although once you figure out how to yaw it turns ok, like a longboard-version of a foil. Roll is slow because of the wingspan. I’ve only ridden it with an unshimmed KD13’’ tail.

Range: I’m a lightwind winging expert (wing 8knots almost every day in the summer on a 5m with 75L board and PNG1010) and this wing would not be able to fly in that. Needs too much board speed for take off. Lightwind you need to be able to pump up on foil with minimal board speed.
This wing is doable around 12knots of wind. Stall speed once your up isn’t bad at all though. Top-end is excellent, doesn’t get out of control and has great resistance to forward pitching, this was surprising to me.

Overall this is a great addition to a quiver. For prone it is a true small wave novelty, you can basically pump it for unlimited time and it’s a real pleasure to pump unlike most wings. I’m a big fan of turning in the pocket and truly surfing waves on a foil and this wing definitely can’t do that but it makes up for it with the novelty of unlimited flight, like a different sport entirely. For wing and downwinding this wing is a no-brainer, so fun and easy to cruise tiny bumps on.

What do folks think about no limitz vs the power carbon masts? I’m 77kg and thinking about an 85cm for winging in waves. I also have a 70cm cedrus for our shallow beach break, and hope those two would cover me.

Nolimitz is much lighter than Power mast but also not as stiff. For ar I thing you might need the stiff mast (axis or cedrus).
