Axis PNG 1300v2 reviews?

Anyone put any time on the png 1300v2 yet? I’d love to hear reports from 1401 pumpers. Also love to hear about how well it goes for beach starts.

I rode the 1300V2 at the AWEA event. I had only 4 launches or so (there were lots of folks waiting to try it) and got only 10 20 pumps on the last 2 rides. I never really got it dialed in so can’t give a full review. My normal dockstart foil is the Axis 1201 (I use a launcher and weigh 195lbs (88kg) as I need more foil speed for the “smaller” 1201 wing). I have also dockstarted the axis 1401 and 1310, 1300 and 1150 over about 4 years. I rode the 1401 for many months and found it “boring” compared to the 1201 which I really love and dockstart all the time right now. The 1300V2 has lots of lift and pumps easily and “quickly” and seems to turn well. The 1300V2 has comparable lift to the 1401 though less drag and faster, it has alot more lift than the 1201 and is almost as fast as the 1201. I ride the 1201 with the Ultrashort Advance+ Fus and 360/45 skinny. I have tried shorter fus and smaller tails and do not like them for dockstarting as they are too hard to ride and feel dialed in on IMO (I am 59 years old though so maybe younger folks would like the feel of the shorter fus and small tails). If I were coming off a wakethief 1150 setup which many dockstarters have learned with and wanted an upgrade I would definitely go with the 1300V2 and ultrashort Adv+ Fus and 360/45 tail. It will take some time to transition and learn the 1300V2 though is 100% doable and you will love the speed, efficiency glide and control the 1300V2 has. I am not sponsored by Axis, though own only Axis foils and have ridden only a few other brands. I mainly dockstart so until now, there weren’t really other brands out there to try for me, being a bigger guy and all. I imagine on the beachstarts it would be good with very good glide and lift though I haven’t ever done a beachstart myself.

Thanks for the info! I’m surprised to hear it’s faster than the 1401, I find I can push the 1401 to up quite fast. While I do enjoy the 1201 for pumping it’s just a pain to start because it needs so much speed. I feel like the 1201 has the best pump feedback of any foil I’ve tried, when you hit that pump perfectly it just zooms.

Yeah, I use a launcher to dockstart the 1201 and run really really fast when I am jumping on it. I am a big guy, 6’4" and 195lbs and love the feel of the 1201 when its moving fast, such nice pumping action and turning!!

How do your pump durations compare on those different foils?

I can go 60 seconds on the 1201 and about 2 min on the 1300 and the 1401

What about your 1150 time? Sorry, last question :grimacing::smile:

It’s all good, the 1150 is same time effort as the 1301, the 1150 you can pump many different ways though seems to go only one speed, the 1300 you need to learn to pump it the way it likes and then it can go fast or slow. The 1300 also pumps more like the newer “modern” dock foils like the 1401 and 1201 and other brands too so the 1300 is what I recommend for folks to learn on, it works well to learn downwind SUP on too, the 1150 seems to be too slow to learn downwind easily. The 1300 also seems to be the easiest Axis foil to do flat water paddle popups on, easier than the 1401 and 1150

I can dock start the 1150 just over 2 mins and the 1300 just over 3.5 mins. I was curious where I would land on the 1201

The per mass power required to fly a foil is linear with the wing loading of the foil. That is engineer speak that means if you and your buddy ride the same foil and they weigh 200lbs and you weigh 160lbs then they will have to put out 1.25 times more work or watts for each pound of weight they have. So if you at 160 lbs put out 320 watts or 2 watts per pound, they at 200 lbs will have to put out 1.25 x 2 watts per pound or 2.5 watts per pound so 500 watts they will have to put out. This will be much much harder for them. Paul MacCready first worked out this math and used this insight to make the first human powered flying plane ever back in 1977 where the key was to allow it to fly slowly with a very low wing loading thus allowing a human to be able to power it. Back to the foil, your buddy at 200 lbs has to put out more power even then just for the greater weight because of the extra weight and then because of the extra weight the foil must be flown faster creating more drag, this is why its doubly harder for heavier people to power the same foil and why new foils with high aspect ratios which help to and larger areas are so popular and the Beta foil is so easy to ride.

I’m 200lbs. I’m always envious of my lighter weight friends :joy:
