Can anyone compare the 120 to the 130X? Obviously the 130 is a bigger foil but how is the turning and pump in the real world?
I spent a lot of time on the 120. I’m learning downwind SUP now and so I replaced the 120 with the 130 John John. I don’t necessarily plan to use the 130 as my go to prone foil, but I have been testing it out and had a couple really fun sessions prone on it now.
All my thoughts below are in reference to the original 120ha, I believe they are currently selling a stiffer version, which would be nice, not sure if they have changed the foil section or anything but I believe it’s just stiffer.
Turning: the 120 has a 35" span, the 130 has a 39" span. So the roll is a little better on the 120, 2" on each wingtip better, you can feel that for sure. However the 130 is smoother feeling to me through turns due to I believe the reduced camber which makes the pitch more stable with acceleration through turns. I have yet to be bucked off the 130 like the 120 can do with the wrong stab in an aggressive turn.
Pump: the 130 is significantly easier/ more relaxed pump. I’m 160lbs and the 130 isn’t quite in the pump to the horizon category, but close. I’ve been getting 8+ minutes of multiple wave connections pretty easily on it. Similar to the 120 it climbs whitewater great and you can dig yourself out of most holes. You do need to keep the speed at a certain level but not as delicate as the 120.
Glide: with the extra span and slightly higher AR the 130 glide is ridiculous. You can feel it. The 130 is just begging to chomp through bumps forward and through.
Can’t wait to use it more for it’s intended use downwinding.
I plan to use one of the new Lift v3 surf wings for prone in the surf, but there could be certain conditions where the 130 is super fun for prone…
