Progression 140 just arrived! First ride

Would love to hear feedback on the progression 140 in head high and over head waves if anyone has used it in those conditions yet. I’d like to hear how it compares to kujira 980 in terms of speed and roll.

@KDW ill ask kane for his interface

Thanks Cliff. The Unifoil shims are very high quality.

The foilparts Takuma tail adapter might also work. The $20 part basically just marries a flat mount to a curved profile tail. It is intended to work with a Takuma tail, but it also works with some of the KD tails I have.

Winged on the 140 progressive for about two hours the other day in 2.8 conditions here in the Gorge (Rowena to Dougs stretch), medium fuse, shunt 0°. 85Kg, mainly riding the Go Foil 850 HA and front straps so had to come in and move the mast forward about 1.5" and probably should have gone about another 1/2"+. Super turny and precise with the Katana mast, better glide than I expected. I could certainly use the long fuse in those conditions as it’s more bigger radius higher speed turns. I’d have to work on tuning the tail for more front foot or maybe just moving the mast forward more to keep my rear leg from flaming out (too much fun to come in!) but that’s an easy fix at the right launch. Getting in/out of the water at Rowena in 35+ and messing with screwdrivers is no fun so can’t fault the foil. I’d love to spend more time on it in more reasonable conditions, It could be a one foil quiver around here.

Coming from go foil you’re gonna want to move it way forward. Try to keep the shimming to a minimum as that will keep the foil fast and it will roll faster. Hope that helps!

Got some waves on the 140 this Am. Feels like the front foot pressure is built in to the wing and it doesn’t need help from the tail. Curious if anyone has found a sweet spot yet? Tried -.5 and think I need to go -.75 or -1 (Marlin 14, have yet to try others that’s just been my fav for cranking carves on the H170)

On this session I was using Hyper2 170/kat75/medfus/13"shiv 0°. I like this foil, I only rode it couple times but I had really good time on it. But now with the Prog140, I don’t know if I want to use it anymore.
The Prog140 pumps better, surfs better and is more foregiven (really low stall speed).
I use the same tuning, I want to be really comfortable on this tuning then I will test different things (shorter fus, shorter stab, base plat shim, tail shiming, etc…).
What I like about the 140 is you can really push on your turn (actually you really have to, to make it work), tips can come out you won’t fall, you won’t eve notice at some point.
The glide is really good, you can let the foil glide for a long time for exemple when getting out of the wave, between each pump, etc…

What I like and what I feel with this foil is the potential, it seems to me it will help me getting better,

A few sessions in chest-head high proning and winging on the prog 140, first feel is :

  • Pump and glide like the kujira 1095
  • Rolls like the cabrinha H800
  • Pitch stable across the speed range
  • Handles breaching really well
  • Relatively slow, prob the speed range of the cabrinha H1000 (?) To be confirmed.

It’s the best prone foil I have ever tried, the combo glide/roll is out of this world. But to me it feels maxed out in speed above chest high on the swells we have here (~12sec period), so it’s definitely a limitation there, it’s been tuned for slow waves I think (which is totally understandable and fair enough).
Will report back after some more testing in smaller conditions.

The P170/P140/Katana combo is looking super high-end, great job Cliffy and Erik! So far I only had a chance to take out my P170 out winging in light wind in Seattle. Enjoying the pump and glide, dialing in the tails and shims. My most recent daily driver has been the new Lift 150hax, which is perfectly balanced for my weight (170 lbs), with a 32 glide tail (with a bunch of other tail waiting for their turn). I’m trying to recreate a similar front/back distribution. I started on the Shank/0, now on Shunt/+2 with the mast all the way forward, which seems to give me similar amount of front foot pressure as 150hax/32. Do folks who ride both Lift and Progressions have any data points on their configurations?

Is there too much range overlap between 170 and 140? They are very close in size and I have the 170 which has very nice low end, and I want to add a smaller wing for bigger waves/wind but the 140 still seems too close/big.

Any plans for small progressions?

I think the difference is pretty big. Can you test drive the 140 somehow?

I rode both back to back and the difference was very significant in choppy head high surf the 170 felt like it was getting pushed around in turbulence where the 140 felt far more settled.

Saw on a reseller site mentioning “125 in May and 210 in July/August”. Also saw a mention of a 155 somewhere. Aparently no plans for a 190 which i was hoping for. Who can confirm all this?

I dont know where you heard that but that’s different from what I know. Stay tuned…. We’re working on some rad stuff right now. I’ll see what I can share and update on the show when I can.

i 'd like to test the new 120 because the 140 felt a bit big for my 62kg when i rode it

1 to 2 foot and glass this morning, prog170 is unreal, once you get in the zone pumping becomes near effortless. The pump and glide in particular might actually be better than the Axis ART1099, and obviously it’s better in every other way.

My initial 140 impression: so stoked. Paid retail, 70++kg mostly onshore beachbreaks, ex-Axis

The package is really good, everything really neat and functional, especially the tool set and tail pack. Covers all nicely thought out and slick. Titanium bolts are super cool.

Two sessions with Shiv+0.5 on medium fuse on Katana 83cm mast. One session with the same but shimmed to 1.5. This made it easier to get the cadence of the pump.

First session had messy crap chest high conditions but was stoked to feel the very rolly active lively feeling that I felt during the demo, but still good pump and really good when high on the mast. I also had one bottom turn tip breach where I was pleasantly surprised to stay up. I did struggle to find the correct pump cadence and the beachbreak was turbulent.

Second and third session in epic 11s period punchy waist+ waves. Really fun conditions, similar to the conditions that I demoed. Occasionally felt overpowered as the waves had some punch, but nice long pumps and links, and the foil moves at a nice speed for swell carves, fast enough to keep up with the moving bumps.

The 140 feels super high performance for me coming from Axis HPS 880, and sensitive to tuning, while not as frustrating on the pump as the ART range. I suspect I will need to play around with the tails. The fuse feels pretty long, close to the Axis ultrashort. I am glad not to have gone shorter or longer as it is close to what I’m used to.

I would say I need some time to figure out the low end. I can do 4-5 succession waves easily but am probably pumping too fast. I think the range is about the same as the 880 with my current pump ability, probably higher, but with incredibly smooth turning. The acceleration when you lay it over is pretty real. I find because of the sensitivity on roll I need to work on a smoother cleaner pump as I find I move around too much on the pump.

I think the Katana mast is probably a slight bit more flexible than the Axis HM, but is also feels thinner, has much less chord at the end and I think this really amplifies the feeling of speed when you get near the top.

So stoked that it is summer and I have this to dial in, our conditions are typically 8-10s period swell with lots of pumping between peaks and generally offshore or side shore, with enough glassy days to make it all worth while. I have not really pushed myself to surf critically in the pocket as I’ve never really felt in tune with any foil I’ve ridden, so I’m hoping this will make it happen.

First session with the Prog140 at my home break, it is easier for me to compare since I know this place like my pocket.
Disclaimer, I sell Unifoil in France, but I ride what I like, at 47 years old I have no time to waste, so for me the most important thing is getting the best gear. I have decided to work with Unifoil because I knew the Progression would be the one. And I’m not disappointed, the Prog140 feels so good, it is exactly what I was looking for !
