Just watched Axel Gerard win the Youth World Freestyle Championships 2024 on the AFS Pure 700 V2. It is pretty fast too since he came second in the racing too. I also had a go on the 700 v2 (I am 85kg) and it is so easy to use for beginners, but with top end performance - think it is one of those foils to change the market. When I found out a international moth foil designer who designed the foil it all makes sense!! I think it is the perfect one foil quiver for racing and riding in the waves.
It’s quite the tow foil !!! Also most fun tow foil for me as well!!
Not bali … But pretty fun conditions here
That looks fun!
What ML foil were you comparing it with? Just curious.
I’ve been riding the Silk 850 and find it rides nose down on both my boards. Are you seeing that? Maybe it’s designed that way. I find in flat water at speed it’s hard to keep it off the water.
I’m riding the Silk as an all-around and wanting to get more in the surf but the nose down is an issue for me. I’m going to experiment with shims.
I love the responsiveness of the silk, just can’t keep the board of the water at speed.
Maybe I need to add the pure v2 when not in the surf?
Any thoughts on this?
I don’t notice that the silks ride nose down and I’ve ridden them on a handful of boards. Is it too far back in your tracks? How do you mean you can’t keep it off the water?
Assume you’re winging?
I only prone / never had a problem with nose down on the silks. Very well balanced at all speeds in my experience
One board, newer shape, 5’5" and 80L I have it all the way forward.
The other an Appletree Jazz 62.5L I’ve been moving it more and more forward. It is a newer Jazz with the longer tracls and I now have it a little forward of center. I can still move it a couple inches further forward.
Do the Silks typically need to be placed far forward in the tracks?
I find at speed, I need to apply more and more back foot pressure to keep the nose from going to the water. Maybe it’s something I’m doing but had not noticed this with my previous foil on the Jazz, actually the opposite … at speed I’d get increasing front foot pressure.
Just trying to sort out what’s going on, I love this foil otherwise.
I’ve ridden the silks on three appletree boards but not the jazz. I don’t know whether the foil placement marks are relative between the boards but on the slice v3 (which also has the long tracks) i ride it with the mast plate lined up at the 10 mark. It’s pretty far forward but not slammed.
It’s slightly forward of center on the skipper but not as far forward as the v3. That board is more of a mid length, I ride it unstrapped and placement isn’t as critical for me on that board.
Use thumb bolts and play around with it on the water. I bet it’s slightly back of the ideal placement based on what you say. You might also try a shim under the tail. I find it to ramp front foot pressure very predictively through its speed range. All foils can get pitchy above their speed range but I find the silk to be pretty well behaved even above 20 knots.
Last outing I had it at 9 on the Jazz. I only ride with front straps but have been strapless trying to tune the placement. My other board may have the tracks too far back.
Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear others are not seeing this.
Sounds like I just need to tune a bit more.
Which tail are you using? Presume no shim
Anyone got any further feedback on the Pure V2?
Using the ML700 on a 92 mast with new stainless connection prepreg construction with tail gates.
Just come back from a UK race event and borrowed a 900 to demo it. Really nice foil as well - slightly slower than the 700 as expected. Managed to get it flying in 11 knots though - it pumps better than the 700 and is easier to get on foil. But goes up wind really well. Interestingly I swapped the pure 145 race stabiliser for the 150 wave stabiliser and it improved the pumping and also loosened up the foil.
Ironically the winner of the slalom event was riding the Silk 1050 and AFS Diamond 6m.
142 tail, no shim
You can try shimming on the mast so the nose gets separated from the foil.
I usually shim 1° (to point the nose of the board away from the foil) for winging with other foils, I actually don’t like to shim the SILKs, my board it’s very flat and that would be the only reason that it does point very flat, but not nose down.
I find the SILKs wanting to be ridden a little more back in the tracks than other foils I’ve tested, and and this goes according to several other reviews I’ve seen online. If it’s giving you a hard time to be kept in water at speeds, giving too much pressure on the front foot, then that might be the reason you’re feeling it points the nose down, you are pushing probably too hard to keep it controles at speeds. When well balanced it’ll glide effortlessly and with balanced front/back pressure, might actually be better to ride it with some allowance to back foot pressure which gives it’s surfy feeling
Hope this makes sense and helps.
This photo it’s configured with a Midlenght custom board - 5’0" x 18 x 47L … For a Midlenght it’s not too forward positioned. Using there a shim on the mast too.
Me too. I Had Silk 850 with 152 stab and looks nice. Maybe we loose some speed
Check if your track box are leveled
Board looks sweet
Wanted to give an update.
Bottom line is there is no issue with the foil.
I’ve ridden the Appleslice v3 70L recently and started with the foil at 10 which was too far forward. Moved to 8 which seemed better and seems roughly centered in the tracks. I think 7 might be better and will tune some more today.
So what was going on?? I’m not completely sure but suspect the issue was weeds, sea grass. I think the weed effect was not obvious, more subtle. We’ve since transitioned to full on weeds making soundside unrideable.
Now riding the ocean, weed free, no issues at all.
Fortunately the shore break has been reasonable so I can ride the ocean. Hopefully this continues for a while, I’d much rather be oceanside.
I love this foil and am thinking of adding another size now
The swell lately has been small, less than waist high, which has me wondering if adding a 1050 would be beneficial? Would the 1050 be noticeably different from the 850 and compliment the 850?
What about tails? I have the 142 and the ha40.
